10 fantastic things to do in Beijing this week
Your week, in the bag
Don't wake up when September ends, wake up right now: there's an excellent lineup of gigs, DJs, art and stage events here in Beijing that'll keep you going all week long.
Kllo
Dusk Dawn Club. Wed 5. 80RMB.
This Melbourne duo breathes new air into the garage sounds of old. The smoky vocals, soulful melodies and mesmerising rhythms create a sound that infuses R&B with electro-pop. Touching down in Beijing this week, Kllo will perform tracks off their full-length debut Backwater.
An Enemy of the People
NCPA. Thu 6-Sat 8. 300-680RMB.
This 'riveting interpretation' of Ibsen's potent 1882 drama explores individual and social responsibility. It is the story of a whistleblower in a small town, whose efforts to speak truth to power are shut down by his self-interested neighbours.
Jessie J
Cadillac Arena. Thu 6. 380-1,580RMB.
Jessie J, who originally made her name with 'Price Tag', has found new fame in China following her appearance and victory on Hunan TV talent contest Singer earlier this year. Building off of her success on the show and the release of a new four-part album ROSE, she'll be knocking out the hits in Beijing this autumn.
R3hab
Elements. Fri 7. 150RMB.
The Dutch DJ and producer – one of the main men of house music across the world – comes to Beijing to play his thumping set at Elements. He's becoming bigger and bigger each year on the electronic music scene, so catch him this Friday for a night of EDM overload.
Steve Aoki
One Third. Fri 7. 220RMB.
Steve Aoki has been riding above the EDM wave since the '90s, and he's bringing his high-energy set to Beijing again, for what seems to be a biannual pilgrimage now. Join what is sure to be a sweaty crowd of disciples at One Third to hear the hits.
Xian Beer Olympics
Xian. Sat 8. 300RMB.
Ready for this year's Xian Beer Olympics? Assemble a team of three sporting beer drinkers and prepare yourself for an afternoon of feats of strength, tests of beer knowledge, contests of speed and agility, artistic acumen, flip-cup finesse and, of course, ping pong prominence.
Lantern's Ninth Anniversary
Lantern. Sat 8. 50RMB.
The Gongti black sheep, a mainstay on the city's alternative electronic scene, edges towards the decade mark with a special party in its subterranean techno dungeon. Featuring Lantern regulars including Elvis T, Ou Yang, Weng Weng, Sun Meng, QQ and Eva Xu.
Entropy
Faurschou Foundation. Sep 9-Feb 19. Free.
