Crazy Rich Asians finally gets a release date in China

Turns out crazy is not too crazy for China

After much fearful speculation – we've been hanging on tenterhooks here, people – it's been announced that Crazy Rich Asians finally has a November 30 release date in Asia's biggest movie market. While there was a lot of debate regarding whether the hugely decadent film would be shown in Chinese cinemas, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chinese regulators gave the word yesterday that the movie would indeed be shown in the Middle Kingdom.

The over-the-top, extravagant richness portrayed in the film made some people question whether Chinese authorities would allow the film one of the coveted import slots due to its conspicuous consumption and blatant elitism. But as The Hollywood Reporter and others suggest, the delayed release date may just have been due to a backlog and recent approval process changes. Whatever the reason, come the end of November, the film will hit the world's second-largest film market, probably making it an even crazier richer Asian film, having already scored over 230 million USD in box offices around the world following an August release.

Crazy Rich Asians marks the first Hollywood film to feature an all-Asian cast in over 25 years, and has seen the film hailed as a breakthrough by US audiences. Since the overwhelming critical and commercial success of its release,  members of the film's all-Asian cast have been propelled further into the spotlight.

Gemma Chan has landed a role as Minn-Erva in the upcoming MCU Captain Marvel film; Constance Wu has front-paged on Vogue and Time and Awkwafina appeared as a host on Saturday Night Live alongside Travis Scott just last week. However, only time will tell if Chinese film-goers, already accustomed to seeing Asian stars on screen, will be as enthralled as the rest of the world.

The news also came with other box-office blessings, including the release dates for Venom (Nov 9), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Nov 16) and Aquaman (Dec 7).
