City envy: Nicki Minaj set to play in Shanghai in November

TimeOutBeijing 2019-05-16

Feeling envious, again?

Nicki Minaj is apparently heading to Shanghai next month, as part of the Indonesia-founded Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) Music Festival, taking place in the Hongqiao area in late November, according to organisers.

The Trinidad and Tobago-born, Queens-raised rapper's name appears on a DWP 'phase one' flyer released by the festival's official WeChat account last night. DJ Snake, Luis Fonsi, Blasterjaxx and a promised 'special guest' also feature on the image. Some have suggested Minaj (known by the nickname 麻辣鸡 malaji, or 'spicy chicken' in Chinese) will perform a 90-minute set at the festival.

That's a pretty massive booking given Nicki recently dropped a new album, aptly named Queen. The festival, which will hold its tenth-anniversary edition in Bali this December and has The Weeknd as a headliner in its native Indonesia, is preparing to open up presale tickets at 2pm today (Monday) for its China version.

So will Nicki perform 'Shanghai' in Shanghai? And how will some of the questionable identity stuff in 'Chun-Li' go down here? We're not sure, but it gives us an excuse to post the video for the latter anyway:

So, if you feel like taking the train down to Shangers, go see the Queen of Queens.

The DWP Festival will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai on Sat 17 and Sun 18 Nov. 1,380-2,380RMB.
