Maovember's back: Grow a 'tache, splash the cash at these events

TimeOutBeijing 2019-05-16

Mao-ve over October, November is here with more lip warmers to grow

The month all people with dads, sons, boyfriends, husbands or workmates with facial hair dread: the return of the mo. As November swiftly approaches (this Thursday, gasp), so too does the annual pilgrimage towards lip hair glory. Luckily, the caterpillar-esque growths on the faces of those we love are usually for a good cause.

The Movember campaign, originally held in Australia throughout the month of November and now a staple around the world, aims to 'change the face of men's health'. By growing a mo and raising money and awareness, the Movember Foundation wants to stop men dying young through recognition of cancers earlier, preventing suicide and generally increasing access to healthier lifestyle options and medical services.

This year, Maovember returns for its sixth incarnation. Playing off the original men's health campaign as well as a Chinese coin worth 1 tenth of a yuan called a mao (... really? That's why? Now you know), the Maovember campaign here in Beijing encourages people to attend events and donate money to worthwhile causes. The 2018 campaign helps to raise funds for Bread of Life and the Library Project – charities in China that aim to help young children and orphans.

So, it actually might be good news for those with potential Mo Bros – to support the cause here in Beijing, you don't have to grow a m(a)o, but simply attend events, buy pins and donate what you can. Read on to find out about the events happening around Beijing.

Maovember Launch Party

XL Bar. Thu 1.

Maovember will kick off its sixth campaign with a party at XL Bar. Be among the first to get the 2018 Maovember pin while enjoying games, drinks (happy hour until 9pm) and food. Owner Jane Cui plans to donate 20 percent of revenue from the party to Maovember, and the delivery van bought for Bread of Life with last year’s funds will be on site.

Maovember Dog Pub Crawl

De Refter. Sat 3.

Get both yourself and your pooch involved this Maovember by joining the second annual Dog Pub Crawl, with stops at De Refter, XL Bar, Jing A Taproom and Paddy O’Shea’s. Donate 100RMB or more to Maovember and you get a drink at each venue while your pooch gets snacks from Penny’s Food Studio.

MulledVember

The Green House. Sun 4.

Guy Fawkes meets mulled cider meets funky disco music and more this Sunday for the Cider Guy's Maovember MulledVember party. Head on down to the Green House (next to Vics) for an evening of mulled cider, Guy Fawkes celebrations at midnight and 80s funk music. All proceeds will go to the Maovember charities.

Maovember Pub Quiz at Q Mex

Q Mex. Wed 21.

For Movember this year, Q Mex will host its fifth annual charity quiz, with brainteasers in both English and Chinese. The optional 100RMB entry fee includes two pitchers of Carlsberg and all proceeds go to Maovember charities. Apparently there will also be a charity auction and drink deals, with more details to come, so grab your team now and get practising. The charity auction starts at 9pm but it's advised you get there early as it’s been packed in previous years.

Mao'roccan Thanksgiving for Maovember

Caravan. Thu 22.

Caravan returns with its third annual Mao’roccan Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy your turkey dinner with a Moroccan twist courtesy of owner Badr Benjelloun. There will be a vegan option, plenty of drinks and more details coming soon.

Schnapps Tasting for Maovember

Groovy Schiller's. Sun 25.

Last year, the schnapps tasting night saw participants trying nine different types of boozy goodness, with finger food (150RMB for tasting and food, proceeds going to Maovember) as well as prizes to be won through all sorts of games. More details to come for this year's event, but last year was apparently quite the experience.

Maovember Closing Party

Paddy O'Shea's. Fri 30.

The annual closing party at Paddy O'Shea's promises a night of 'stachingly great fun. As the month of Maovember comes to a close, expect special drinks, live music, raffle draws, games and a whole load of dudes whose facial hair has achieved its final fluffy form. Congrats, Maov'ers.
