Yellow Claw
Headhunterz
Ciel
Slash
Beijing Exhibition Center. Sun 20. 680-1,680RMB.
Award-winning hard rock guitarist Slash comes to Beijing to play his best and greatest hits. In 1985, he joined Guns N’ Roses, earning international acclaim for riffs on songs like 'Sweet Child o’ Mine'. After leaving GNR in 1996, Slash did session work and formed other bands, such as Velvet Revolver, and released two solo albums.
Kodaline
Tango. Mon 18 Feb. 450RMB.
Kodaline's distinct alternative folk sound has brought them awards and fame around the world. With platinum albums and top hits, including 'All I Want' and 'High Hopes', gracing the background of many films and TV shows, their success has continued to soar. They come to Beijing in support of their latest album Politics of Living – which hit number 1 in Ireland, perhaps to no one's surprise. Catch the infectious beats and charismatic foursome this Feb.
Lillies and Remains
Yue Space. Thu 21 Feb. 90RMB.
Just over ten years ago, Lillies and Remains burst onto the post-punk, new wave scene in Japan. Blending unforgettable hooks with metallic guitar riffs and a nihilistic take on the world, frontman Kent and guitarist Kazuya have created a rather unique sound that captured attentions both in Japan and abroad. They head to Beijing with their tour for latest album Romanticism.
Craig David
Beijing Exhibition Center. Sun 24 Feb. 480-880RMB.
The one, the only, the man of a generation's dreams. Or some people at least. Craig David heads to Beijing in February to play a DJ set under his TS5 guise, dropping R&B classics alongside hip-hop, house, dub, reggae and hopefully some of the classic noughties hits he made his name with. David burst onto the UK garage scene after releasing the banger that is 'Re-Rewind', and followed it up with softer R&B hits 'Fill Me In', '7 Days' and 'Walking Away' on his 2001 debut Born To Do It. He's now based out of Miami, where he spins at some of the city's most exclusive pre-parties – for one night only, maybe he can bring that vibe to the grand, Communist-aesthetic setting of the Beijing Exhibition Center.
Joyce Didonato
NCPA. Fri 11. 180-880RMB.
Dubbed 'the most potent female singer of her generation' by The New Yorker, multi Grammy Award-winner Joyce DiDonato has soared to the top of the industry, gaining international prominence in operas by Handel and Mozart, as well as through her wide-ranging, acclaimed discography. Arriving in Beijing this January, the songstress performs a programme of Handel and Purcell alongside prize-winning orchestra Il Pomo d'Oro.
La Traviata
NCPA. Tue 22-Sat 26. 100-880RMB.
The NCPA presents Verdi’s classic about the honourable courtesan who sacrifices happiness for love. Set in nineteenth-century Paris, the story follows the courtesan Violetta who soon meets and falls in love with a young man named Alfredo. After leaving the luxurious Paris social circles, Violetta soon has to content with Alfredo's father and his demands that she leave his son for the sake of the family's reputation.
Mozart, L'Opera Rock
Tianqiao Performing Arts Centre. Fri 22 Feb-Sun 10 Mar. 180-1,180RMB.
Original songs and Mozart classics combine in this dazzling show that follows a dramatisation of Mozart's life, exploring the music and the man that became immortal. Original songs include 'Le bien qui fait mal' ('The good thing that hurts') and 'Tatoue-moi' ('Tattoo me'), using the composer's melodies with a passionate rock twist.
School of Rock
Tianqiao Performing Arts Centre. Fri 22 Mar-Sun 24 Mar. 180-1,180RMB.
If you loved Jack Black's hilarious performance in the hit film School of Rock, this might just be the perfect musical for you. And even if you haven't seen the film – or didn't love it, that's okay too – this still might be the musical for you. With a new score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Julian Fellowes and an incredible cast, School of Rock the musical hits all the right notes. The story follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a bit of extra cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band.
