5 of the best resources for following Beijing music

Patrick Moore TimeOutBeijing 2019-05-16

The best blogs and channels for keeping up with what's hot in Beijing music

The music scene in Beijing is a fast-growing and fast-changing beast. From gigs to finding new bands to following industry news, these platforms have got it covered.

Live Beijing Music

Beijing's most comprehensive music coverage blog puts out photo recaps of gigs, listings, videos, mixtapes and interviews. The man behind it, Will Griffith also hosts LBM-branded nights featuring performances from some of the best in local music.

Follow WeChat account ‘LiveBeijingMusic’ for more.

Showstart

Ticketing platform Showstart is becoming an ever more useful resource, if you're savvy enough in Chinese. Sign up for an account, follow artists to receive alerts, find similar ones, keep up with announcements from labels and venues and snag presale tickets.

Visit www.showstart.com for more.

The World Underground

This fantastic film project focuses on underground music scenes around the world. China, the first in the series, may have been completed back in 2015, buts its creator John Yingling continues to provide occasional Beijing and China coverage, as well as live recordings (free to listen) of bands from both China and across the globe.

Visit www.theworldunderground.com for more.

Unite Asia

All things metal, punk and hardcore across the continent – Unite Asia isn't dedicated to the Beijing or Chinese scene per se, but a fine spot to keep an eye out for features on, and album and tour announcements from local bands.

Visit www.uniteasia.org for more.

Zhong.TV

Shanghai-based Zhong.TV claims to be the OG behind the DIY digital music video wave in the Chinese hip-hop scene that broke out in 2010. In any case, it’s been doing a stellar job spreading and 'representing China’s urban youth culture' to the wider world ever since, racking up millions of views and thousands of subscribers across a range of bilingual platforms. You’ll struggle to find a better resource for getting into the Chinese scene.

Zhong.TV’s content – most of which is given English subtitling – ranges from artist video drops, live shows and interviews to tour announcements and short docs, updated daily on its website, Instagram, Facebook, Weibo, Youku and YouTube channels.
