Beijing Art Book Fair 2019

Founded in 2015, art book in China (abC) has dedicated itself to the promotion of local artists’ books and independent publications in China, as well as introducing global publishers and institutions in creating multilateral dialogue. It has been creating influence in fields of contemporary art, design, and publishing, This year's fair will feature talks, workshops and screening programmes in addition to its usual fare of exhibitors.


Drunk Debates at the Bookworm

What better way to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival than by watching comedians get drunk and debate over a bunch of topics. Forced to take shots before and after each round, comedians battle it out through a series of hilarious argumentation. Whoever's left standing triumphs. There will also be a visiting performance from He Fangzhou, a professional comedian from Canada. Catch him in Beijing for one night only at Bookworm's Drunk Debates.


Hike the Great Wall

Hike up the relatively unexplored stretch of the Great Wall, visiting both restored and unrestored sections. Beginning at the Huanghuacheng Reservoir, make your way to a walled village that used to be a Ming Dynasty-era army barracks. The hike is moderately difficult, with a few steep climbs and some loose rocks and bricks. Price includes a late lunch of Chinese food after the hike. 



Summer Oyster Fest

Shuck off, this is too good to be true! All summer long is Mosto's summer oyster fest. Treat yourself to imported French BB Boudeuse oysters at just 20RMB each. Better yet, this promotion's all day, every day.


Píno Official Launch

Slow Boat Dengshikou Opening Party

The latest of Slow Boat's outposts is Dengshikou taproom. Seating more than 50 people with an al fresco space perfect for summer, the Dengshikou taproom will be offering its full range of beers on tap. They will also be the only branch to offer a rotating range of experimental sour beers and ciders on draught. An expanded menu of cocktails and new grill items are also good reasons to head out of your usual Sanlitun or Gulou haunts and give this one a go instead. Join them for their opening party this Friday till Sunday from 11am.


Celebrate World Ocean's Day at Kerry

On this special day, the buffet brunch is stocked with selected seafood that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). This is part of the hotel's sustainable sourcing strategy and commitment to make a positive impact on the environment. There will also be a colouring activity for children to encourage them to think about the marine life and educate them on the importance of a healthy ocean.


Spanish BBQ Brunch

Every weekend in the months of June and July, ARIA restaurant is offering a special Spanish BBQ brunch. At 268RMB, it's a three-course menu serving a variety of options from charcuteries and French onion soups to main courses like barbecued Spanish sausages, and seafood.

Crystal Lake is a Japanese metalcore band from Tokyo. Formed in 2002, Crystal Lake has since performed at Japanese indie music festival Independence-D, toured through Japan and Europe performing at 18 shows and eight festivals including UK's Tech-Fest 2018.

Iceage is more than a punk band from Copenhagen, Denmark. Each of their four albums have attained the coveted 'best new music' tag from Pitchfork, and other music publications. With its unhinged, poetic melodies and fresh guitar sounds, Iceage is a fast rising band with a pop-gothic grandeur.


Mazikduo

The Mazikduo, Tolo Genestar on clarinet and Marc Susmi on piano, will be bringing their music to La Plantation this weekend playing a number of classical pieces such as Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke Op. 73, Ernest Chausson's Andante et Allegro Ernest Bloch and more.



Afro House Friday Session

DJ Larry aka Maclarry brings his afro-tunes to the dance floor. As a Nigerian-born DJ, DJ Larry has travelled far and beyond on the road being a disc jockey. In the late ’90s, he started his DJ career spinning for clubs and big events in the US. He quickly adapted to the diverse and versatile style of the vast music scene, fusing two of his favourites genres, house and Afro.


Lantern Night and DeePleasure

Playing at Lantern this weekend is guest DJ Zuckermann, a producer and DJ from Berlin known for his uncompromising artistic approach to House and Techno. His attitudes are deeply influenced by the roots of Berlin and Detroit electronic music, his tracks an exercise in experimental vigour. Playing are also Beijing DJs Sun Meng, Jackson Lee, Kai.F, Leslie Jaycee and more.


Manara

A familiar face on the London club circuit, Manara‘s DJ sets are laced with punchy future club sounds, nods to R&B classics influenced by Bollywood films. She’s affiliated with the innovative Night Slugs and Fade 2 Mind labels and continually provides selections, on point for the late night grooves.


Smiley: One Third's Original Music Festival

Party hard this weekend at One Third where they'll be having two consecutive nights of music and power DJs playing all throughout. One ticket entitles you to a party bag that's filled with yellow delights like a yellow T-shirt and socks, which you're expected to don once you enter. They've also got an exclusive smiley merchandise store and a special photo wall plastered with smileys. And that's not all; the best part's got to be the indoor ball pit. Need we say more?

With a musical career of over twenty years and a record of more than a hundred releases, Héctor Sandoval is deep into his new music project, Tensal. Its techno beats leaning towards modern and cyclic, based upon classic synth lines. Tensal's DJ set explores all facets of techno, alternating between textures and intensities. Catch his at Lantern this weekend.


Yinyang Music Festival 2019

Acclaimed music festival Yinyang returns for the sixth year this June. No word on headliners yet, but expect a jam-packed schedule of live performances, visual art projections and even yoga classes taking place over five different stages. For those who want to grab some sleep at some point during the festivities, camping and hotel packages are also available.



Beijing Indie Short Film Festival

The Beijing Indie Short Film Festival is back for its fourth year on June 7 at Camera Stylo. This year's line-up of 20 films includes submissions from around the world and films were specifically chosen for its connection to the indie filmmaking scene in Beijing. Each film will be in Chinese or English with English or Chinese subtitles respectively.

Andrew Nelsons is the Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Leading a pioneering alliance between two esteemed institutions, Grammy award winning Nelsons is firmly underlined as one of the most renowned and innovative conductors on the international scene today. He leads the Gewandhausorchester, the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world, founded during Johann Sebastian Bach's tenure as Thomaskantor.


Guangxi Art Performance Group: Meogga's Garden

For thousands of years, flowers have been central to the folk stories of the Zhuang people in Guangxi. According to them, the Zhuang people are flowers in the garden of Menogga. Menogga's Garden is a tale about two flowers, Da Mian and Bu Zhuang and a jealous spider. With dramatic ups and downs, Menogga's Garden is the power of love, the pursuit of goodness and the curbing of wickedness.

The classic Shakespearean tale of a pair of star-crossed lovers comes to Beijing's main stage. In this French musical, Shakespeare's story is told in an entertaining way – with catchy pop and rock tunes by composer Gerad Presgurvic and modern street-punk styled costumes worn by the cast. 



Yang Li Ping: Pingtan Impression

Pingtan Impression is a new dance drama created by renowned Chinese dancer-choreographer Yang Li Ping. Pingtan Impression shines a spotlight on Pingtan, an island city located off the coast of Fujian. Weaving together the city's traditional folk culture, local dialect, legends, puppet and marionette shows, the show depicts the island city's beauty and originality. Pingtan Impression is a tale of the legendary love story between Junshanwang, Pingtan's ancestor and Pingtanlan, the daughter of the sea.




Comic and Graphic Art Festival 2019

Exhibition-Making Practices in China and Southeast Asia in 1990s

The Reading Room project is a public accessible study space and an on-going archival project focusing on exhibition practices during the 90s in China and Southeast Asia. Audiences are invited to interact with a growing collection of publications, which have been compiled to help disseminate, draw awareness, and promote accessibility to different book forms and methods of documenting exhibition histories. This is a research initiative in collaboration with Rockbund Art Museum and independent curator Biliana Ciric.


Impression of the Age: Tang Xiaoming's Art Research Exhibition

This exhibition is the first systematic presentation of Tang Xiaoming's artistic exploration and achievements of more than 60 years. LOVE LOVE LOVE: A Journey in LOVE

Focused on the theme of travel, this exhibition reviews the past 40 years of China through the travelling stories of ten artists. It is the first time that the works of Andy Warhol, pioneer of pop art movement, and Jean-Michel Jarre, the father of French electronic music, are exhibited alongside each other. The exhibition is divided into four chapters wandering between reality and imagination, the past and the future, leading audiences on a journey through time and space.

A showcase of the photography works of journalist turned photographer Chen Dazhi. Divided into five different sections, it is a compilation of his pursuit and presentation of photography in three different aspects: natural landscapes, human activities and the spiritual world. Chen Dazhi's fundamental efforts aim to break through the barriers between 'image', 'media' and 'spirit', and in turn unify the relationship between time and space.
