TO Gourmet Network: Oh Yeah! Brewing

TimeOutBeijing 2019-10-23

The microbrewery phenomenon in Beijing continues to flourish and the latest addition to the scene Oh Yeah! Brewing promises even more tasty offerings.

Situated a block southeast of Guomao Bridge, Oh Yeah! Brewing takes up a massive two-storeys in the CBD. Its floor space covers 1,000sqm and has a seasons-defying space that seats 190 indoors as well as an outdoor beer garden that can hold 40 summer revelers.

With wood-panelled walls, industrial pipes suspended on ceilings and dangling light fixtures, its interior is modern, clean and bright throughout. And wherever you are on either level of its space, you can’t miss its huge and shiny stainless steel beer tanks  – perhaps a design element to highlight that its beers take centrestage at Oh Yeah! Brewing.

Its ground floor is a bustle of activity all hours of the day. It conducts brewery tours and regular live band performances on weekend nights. It also has Sunday movie nights with films projected on a big screen.

Its second level on the other hand embraces a more private and intimate atmosphere. Those looking for a bit more conversation can head to the many sleek booths and curved couches. Couples and groups will appreciate its dim-lit setting which is great for a tete-a-tete.

But the star of Oh Yeah! Brewing is of course, its brews. Created by Aussie head brew master, Joshua Kendal, who honed his craft in Australia, its beer menu is perfect for those jaded with the city’s typical IPAs and lagers and hankering for something a bit different.

This month, it has on tap, eight brews, its Pilsener (30RMB half pint/45RMB pint), White beer (32RMB/48RMB), OYPA – or Oh Yeah! Pale Ale (34RMB/45RMB), IPA (38RMB/55RMB), Little Ale (30RMB/45RMB), Fruitopia (35RMB/50RMB), Silk Road Porter (35RMB/50RMB) and its Apple & Pear Cider (30RMB/45RMB). Those undecided can opt for its tasting paddle (88RMB) of four brews and then order their favourites later in full sized pints. It also plans to offer seasonal brews from next month.

Its Fruitopia is interesting: a sour beer brewed with only seasonal fruit grown in China and varies in flavour and colour every season. It’s currently mango, passion fruit and dragonfruit though that will change with the seasons.

Dark beer fans should try its Silk Road Porter, a brown porter layered with a chocolate and coffee malt flavours. It’s served on nitro to provide a creamy and smooth texture. It pairs well with the selection of slow-cooked dishes befitting of carnivores that feature heavily on its food menu.

For those who’d rather stick with lighter, fruitier flavours for the summer, try its OYPA and IPA.  The OYPA is fashioned after the beers enjoyed on Australia’s: smooth and refreshing with a hint of passion fruit and citrus. They’re dangerously easy to quaff and are a perfect balm for Beijing’s scorching days.

Kendal will continually change things up. Oh Yeah! Brewing is gearing up to launch more seasonal and temporary offerings from next month. New additions to its menu will include a 8.5% ABV double hazy IPA and a 6.8% ABV wild saison, a pale ale brewed with a wild yeast. There are also plans to release a 10% ABV stout come winter to counter Beijing's frigid temps. A portion of which will be aged in oak barrels that will result in a smoother brew with oak and vanilla tones. Something to look forward to, then.

You can’t drink on an empty belly, which is why its beer menu takes the guesswork out of ordering with recommendations for each brew that matches its taste profiles and perhaps more importantly for some, to best line the stomach. Pick from its braised beef ribs, roasted lamp chops, fried chicken as well as traditional Italian-style pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven.

All perfect complements, of course, to wash down with its cold brews.

Not like you need more reason to head down, but Oh Yeah! Brewing currently has fantastic daily happy hour deals.
