Here's what 782 million tourists look like during Golden Week

More travellers, and more low-steppers this year

As millions have returned to the grind after a week of travel extravaganza that saw top scenic spots swamped by Chinese tourists, it's with much relief to say that Golden Week has drawn to a close. 


Record has been made (again), according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, reportedly with 782 million domestic travellers received and some 649 billion RMB spent in the Golden Week tourism. 


Interestingly though, in spite of the record number of tourists, more people this year didn't move as much. A report by WeChat reveals that over 34 million in China have walked fewer than 100 steps at least one given day in the Golden Week – a whopping 13 million more compared to last year. Maybe that has to do with being stranded with sweaty masses at tourist sites, or hibernating behind closed doors for staycations.
