Cinemas, KTVs and more: Here's what's opening up next in Beijing

Joey Liao TimeOutBeijing 2020-11-03

While the sweltering heat and lingering health concerns have kept things relatively quiet in the city, it seems that's about to shift again. Following 16 straight days of no cases reported, Beijing has lowered its emergency response level, meaning we can once again look forward to a slew of local venues, businesses, or even a number of our favourite things to do in the city making a steady return. From movie theatres, KTVs to restaurants and bars, here is what we can expect to reopen next in the capital.

Cinemas in Beijing’s low-risk areas will be allowed to welcome back moviegoers as soon as this Friday, July 24, according to the Beijing Film Bureau in an official statement this week. However, a little patience may be required on the way into the theatre

At this point, it looks like few set dates have been announced by most cinemas yet, as specific opening times are determined by each venue and likely to vary greatly. Also announced was a set of social distancing measures to be implemented on site – so expect limited capacity, reduced viewing times, staggered sessions, and mostly the experience of going out to the movies to be a tad different.

KTVs

Having remained shuttered for as long as other entertainment venues, KTV joints in the city's low-risk areas are also likely to be back in the game soon – with caution, of course. According to a statement by the city's authority yesterday, local karaoke outlets are allowed to reopen to 50 percent of their maximum capacity, as well as their small, private rooms, though visitors might only be able to flex their vocal cords for a limited time, as the guideline suggests each session should not exceed two hours.

Scenic spots

Local parks have also increased their capacity from the previous 30 percent to 50 percent. Major tourist attractions such as the Palace Museum have also opened their indoor exhibition area this week. To save time and energy, it's recommended to purchase your ticket online in advance.

Essential business

Dining and drinking establishments that were reluctantly shut might have had to wait a little longer than initially expected, but with the current lowered risk status, many venues have announced their return. Notably ones including Arrow Factory Brewing, Aurora, Bottega (Sanlitun), De Refter, Daruma, El Barrio, Q Mex (Sanlitun), Slow Boat (Sanlitun & Maizidian) and The Local.

In addition to gyms, other fitness centres and grassroots sports activities are also back on. Low-risk areas are reportedly allowed to hold sports events with less than 500 participants, including organizers and spectators, according to state media.
