China is a land of opportunities. Regardless of whether you are a fresh graduate looking to expand your horizons and get on the fast track to climb up the career ladder, or you are a seasoned expert looking for your next big challenge, China offers limitless opportunities.

However, you can’t simply pack your bags, head over to China, and start working legally straight away. To become employed in the PRC, you’ll need to get your hands on a Chinese work visa.

For many expats in China, applying for a work visa can seem to be an extremely daunting task. How do you actually go about applying for the correct visa? Is it a really complicated, drawn-out process? Will you get rejected? Don’t worry – today; we’ll answer all of those questions for you, so you can forget your worries and get that dream job you’ve always wanted.

Big Ha, the host of Face Time, recently sat down with two guests – a visa expert, and an American expat currently in the process of applying for a work visa – to find out everything there is to know. He asked all of the hard questions, so you don’t have to!

To find out the best way to apply for a work visa, and all of the reasons why you should, make sure you watch the latest episode of Face Time (above).

If you are on the run and don’t have time to watch the entire episode, here are a few takeaways from today’s show, compacted down into a few dot points:

Expats are not allowed to work in China on business visas.

Penalties, detention, and deportation, could result from working in China illegally or without the proper documentation.

Chinese work visas are now categorized into A, B, and C types: A for high-level talents, B for qualified professionals, and C for standard professionals.

Expats in Guangzhou can apply for a “Talent Green Card” to enjoy additional benefits, including the right to purchase property and send their children to local public schools.

Recently, procedures for applying for a work permit have been simplified to make the process much quicker and less of a headache.

Expats should only work in the field stipulated by their work permit, so side jobs are technically not permitted.
