10 Cool & Alternative Things To Do In Shanghai

ShanghaiWOWeng 2016-12-29

So you've been in Shanghai a while and you've seen all the usual stuff. Or maybe you have visitors coming and can't be bothered going to the Bund or Shanghai Museum again. Let's not even mention that awfully crowded place Yu Garden. Fair enough. We have made a little list of some other things you can do in this great city:

Play the latest Sega arcade games

Joypolis

Address: 3300 Zhongshan Bei Lu, near Jinshajiang Lu, Putuo district

Tel: 021 62569108
How much: RMB 198 (weekdays), RMB 248 (weekends)

Earlier this year, Shanghai got the latest in Sega's chain of arcade and amusement parks Joypolis, which first started in Japan in 1994. This one is large, covering an area of over 8000 sqm with more than 21 attractions. You could spend a whole day here (though it may not be entirely healthy), playing on the virtual race cars, the signature Transformers rotating bullet, the indoor roller coaster, plus loads of other comical and quirky technologies.

Explore an art deco slaughterhouse

1933 Slaughterhouse

Address: 10 Shajing Lu, near Jiulong Lu, Hongkou district

When: Daily, 08:30-22:00

This is a must see for any architecture lovers. Built in 1933 by Chinese developers, but based on a British design and using British concrete, this Art Deco building was originally intended as a slaughterhouse. Stairs, ramps, bridges and supports connect the outer shell at different levels, all of it designed to funnel cattle through the building.

This labyrinth has been used for various purposes over the years, including a medicine factory and cold storage facility, and now it's a commercial hub half filled with overpriced eateries, bars, galleries and, rather depressingly, the Ferrari Owner's Club. But ignoring that, the haunting beauty of this old industrial building makes it well worth the trip.

Discover some hidden bars

  • Flask: 432 Shaanxi Bei Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu, Xuhui District (021 33686108)

  • Speak Low: 579 Fuxing Zhong Lu, near Ruijin Er Lu, Xuhui District (021 64160133)

  • Genesis: 442 Zizhong Lu, near Danshui Lu, Huangpu district (021 63169107)

Hidden bars have become quite popular in Shanghai recently, with a few popping up in different places. So they aren’t as secret as your traditional speakeasy, but a visit to one of these bars is definitely a different experience from your average bar. Most famous of them all is Flask, a large, elegantly designed cocktail lounge hidden behind a vintage Coca Cola machine. Another is Speak Low, hidden behind a bookcase in a bar on Fuxing Zhong Lu. Or for something more peculiar, check out the one concealed inside a former Catholic clergy hostel at Xintiandi – Genesis.

Snap an 'Old Shanghai' film set

Shanghai Film Park

Address: 4915 Beisong Gong Lu, near Yingcheng Lu, Chedun, Songjiang district

Tel: 021 57601166 /  57600008
Hours: Daily, 08:30-16:30
How much: RMB 80
Website: www.shfilmpark.com

Made for filming, the Shanghai Film Park is a unique place featuring replica buildings from 1930s Shanghai. Open to the public, it's a great location for taking a few snaps of the old and European buildings in iconic areas like Nanjing Lu, the Suzhou Creek Neighborhood, Zhejiang Road Steel Bridge. There is a tram tour that takes you round all the essential sights, as well as a costume exhibition tour where you can discover costumes and props from the different dynasties.

Escape a puzzle room

Mr X Mystery House

Address: Bldg 1, 550 Jumen Lu, near Quxi Lu, Huangpu district

Tel: 021 33041233
When: Daily, 12:00-22:00
How much: RMB 120-150

This Japanese-style puzzle room is great for a challenge. Go with a group of friends and try to figure out how you can get out of a locked room together. Clues are hidden about the place and you might be expected to solve mathematic riddles, figure out patterns and crawl under crossing lasers. There are five differently themed rooms in total. Get those brain cells working!

Get your clothes tailor made

South Bund Fabric Market

Where: 399 Lujiabang Lu, near Zhongshan Nan Lu, Huangpu district

When: Daily, 09:00-18:00

Way better than the Fake Market on Nanjing Lu, the South Bund Fabric Market has to be one of the best things in the city. You can get all kinds of clothes made there, from day dresses to ball gowns, accessories and a range of different quality suits, all tailored to your body. Getting the same thing done in Europe would cost a fair chunk of your cash, but here you can get a well-made suit for around RMB 700 or less if you really know how to bargain hard. The clothes are made incredibly quickly too, anywhere from 3 days to a week. Go for the shops where the sales people aren't shouting at you to come in, generally a better bet.

Wander past urban regeneration

Xuhui Riverside Public Open Space

Where: Dong’an Lu, near Longteng Ave

A great alternative to walking along the Bund, the Xuhui Riverside Public Open Space has to be one of our favorite routes in the city. Apart from a great view of the boats on the river, you will also pass under bright red former cargo cranes which give the area a sense of urban renewal, plus there is also a fairly difficult climbing wall, basketball courts and a skate park. The Long Museum and West Bund Art Center are also here if you fancy a cultural excursion. Expect to pass one or two large groups of dogs plus their owners hanging out together and the odd Chinese wedding couple.

Rent a sidecar for a day

Shanghai Insiders

Tel: 138 17616975

Website: www.shanghaiinsiders.com/datas

There is no better way to see Shanghai than on a bike. If you don't own one yourself (but seriously, why wouldn't you?) or have visitors, then this is a great, albeit slightly expensive, option. Led by long-time expats or English-speaking locals, the tours are generally quite flexible and take you off the beaten track, as it were. Shanghai Insiders is one of the main tour providers – they have vintage restored motorbike sidecars and can tailor tours to your interests like architecture, photography, Chinese culture, etc.

Visit some unique museums

  • Shanghai Chopsticks Museum: 191 Doulun Lu, near Sichuan Lu,Hongkou district

  • Old Camera Museum: 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Xi Lu, Huangpu district

  • Shanghai Museum of Glass: Build. 8, 685 Changjian Lu, Baoshan district

Shanghai has loads of interesting museums, but the strange and eccentric ones are a little harder to find. The Shanghai Chopstick Museum makes for an interesting diversion, featuring hundreds of collector Lan Xiang's chopsticks from all over Asia. For the camera enthusiasts, there is an old camera manufacturing museum near to Tianzifang, displaying a collection vintage cameras. There is also a workshop where you can see how the specialists restore old cameras.

Other than that Shanghai is also home to a Museum of Glass, with some beautiful, artistic pieces from China and overseas. They also have glass artworks from big designer names and organize workshops with demonstrations of glass making.

See some crazy acrobatics

Shanghai Circus World

Address: 2266 Gonghe Xin Lu, near Guangzhong Lu

Tel: 021 56653646

When: Daily, 19:30

Ok so it's maybe a bit obvious, but if you haven't been to see the circus yet in China you should definitely make some time for this one. 'ERA: The Intersection of Time' runs daily at 7.30pm and features a range of breath-taking stunts and acrobatics from some alarmingly young performers. Be sure to get there on time as one of the earliest performances – the girls riding bicycles – is one of the best. You can buy snacks and beers for inflated prices in the foyer.
