Craft beer seems to be covering the city in a sudsy wave of delight. The appeal behind the brew is in the quality of ingredients, the adventurous DIY spirit of it all, and most importantly: the taste. Every sip has a carefully concocted flavor that factory brands just can’t compete with. Brew masters mix malt, hops and yeast with a range of other enhancing flavors, all in the pursuit of the perfect drink. From local brews to international imports, here’s our list of places to go try a few!

World of Beer, a Florida-based craft tavern concept featuring 550+ craft and international beers,has landed in Shanghai.


JACKIE'S BEER NEST

Locals swear by this little Laoximen hole-in-the-wall. Its cozy neighborhood atmosphere is only out-shined by the delicious selection of tap beers, all for RMB 60 a glass. It’s named after an actual guy named Jackie, who will most likely be the one serving you the beer.


LIQUID LAUNDRY KITCHEN & BREW

Liquid Laundry is like a Frankenstein of incredible food, venue and drinks. They all work amazingly and compliment each other. The food here usually gets most of the attention but don’t sleep on their beer menu. Their craft selection is as good as any in the city.

A Shanghainese remake of Paulaner, the Brewer serves up more cocktails, wines and food like steak and pizza, rather than beer. Great spot to enjoy some outdoor air and a pint or four. 

REBERG BREWPUB

A spacious brew pub nestled a bit far from all its rivals in the city center, but still offering quite a wide range of crafts, which are difficult to find in other brew spots. 


DR. BEER

Set in a grand loft-style space and designed by the team behind Dr.Wine, Dr. Beer always brews its five beers on the premises - Wheat, Pale Ale, Pilsner, IPA and Dark Ale (RMB 48 for small or RMB 58 for medium). If you can’t decide which one to go for, there’s always the option of ordering the Brew Master’s tasting panel (RMB 68), which lets you try them all. For a special touch, they even have several private tables with personal beer taps, which can be set up to pump out your favorite brew.

Show us a beer-lover who doesn’t like Shanghai Brewery, and we will get you a free brew from this famous ‘laboratory’. With three branches scattered around the city, these outposts offer some of the best craft-beers and ciders in Shanghai, complementing the drinks with a big selection of Western and fusion dishes. Beer lovers can pick from award-wining beers and ciders like Donghu White IPA, Hongmei Amber Hefeweizen, and 18 Creeks Strawberry & Lime Cider (RMB 48 for the large-size glass). There’s also a seasonal Brewmeister’s Choice available, and a long list of exclusive signature cocktails (RMB 60 each). Names that are leaping out include the Duck's Quack (gin, lemon juice, apple syrup, sparkling tablet), the Brandy Patootie (brandy, cacao white, fruit, ginger ale), and the Lalapazaza (amber rum, masarchino, frangelico, orange bitters). The food is a mix of Mexican, German, British and Italian dishes, catering to a wide variety of tastes. There are some spot-on fish tacos, as well as a pumpkin salad with spicy popcorn, plus classics like burgers and BBQ chicken pizzas.


 

BOXING CAT BREWERY

Run by serial restaurateur Kelley Lee, Boxing Cat Brewery is an American–style brew pub with some truly perfect craft beer on tap. You can always get their staples like mildly hopped Right Hook Helle, Standing 8 Pilsner- a pilsner with low malt flavor from Czech “noble” hops, TKO India Pale Ale, Donkey Punch Porter brewed with cacao and ancho peppers, German Ringside Red, as well as Sucker Punch Pale Ale - a hop with notes of tropical fruit such as mango or guava. To sample one small hop will cost you RMB 20, a pint goes for RMB 50 while a pitcher will be RMB 125. Plus, they also have a seasonal selection as well as a happy hour that works Mon-Thu 5 to 8pm and Fri-Sun 3 to 8pm, when you can get a pitcher for RMB 100.
