Shanghai occasionally gets a bad wrap for its pizza but it’s undeserved. Here are a bunch of places with pizza as good as any other city you’d go to… probably even better. Let’s be real, Pizza is the greatest thing in the world. It’s better than vaccines, sliced bread, iphones. the internet. Pizza… is life.

Truly authentic Italian pizza in Shanghai is like a unicorn, there are stories, but not a lot of physical evidence. And when you do find one, they usually ask an entire paycheck for a tiny flat bread with cheese. Bella Napoli is a real unicorn though, all of their ingredients are imported from Italy, as are the chefs who make these magical, delicious pizzas.

Pizza Delfina isn’t going to change anyone’s life with their pizza, but it is pretty damn good. If you’re looking for a slightly above average pie at a good price, stop into Delfina. There’s one on Huaihai lu and one out in Pudong.

Freshly made pizzas, done right by Italian Chefs, what more could one ask of a pizza place? Of course the prices may be a bit higher than you’re used to paying for pizza, but that’s because they do it top-notch, with the freshest, highest-quality ingredients. An of course it doesn’t hurt that they’ve got a gorgeous venue to devour them in.

Somewhat hidden away from the bustling pizza streets below, Cucina sits on the 56th floor of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, quietly making pizza masterpieces.  They’ve got incredible wood-fired pizzas, priced slightly higher than average, but well worth it for the food quality and the venue.

We’re not sure about the claim that this pizza is ‘New York Style’, but it certainly comes closer than most in this city. They’ve got delicious, big pizzas, given to you thin and crispy, right out of the oven. If you’re looking for an evening out you should try their Tianzifang location, which is smack dab in the middle of those winding alleyways.

Capo is seriously, like seriously, really good. Their pizza especially. CAPO (meaning boss or leader) serves the finest quality imported ingredients, with Chef Enzo Carbone's rustic Italian cuisine at the helm, the pizza is almost an afterthought… but it shouldn’t be... it should be the main thought. Pizzas range from a traditional Margherita for RMB 78, up to RMB 128 for a Parma. All insanely delicious.

Despite the hilariously cliché Italian name, MammaMia delivers the goods. Their pizzas are a cheesy, authentic delight that will leave you in a dreamy pizza coma. All of their pizzas are made using recipes handed down for generations, and pizzas are made according to ‘The Assosication Verace Pizza Napoletana’ which requires the use of imported flour from a historic Napoletano family-owned mill, the freshest buffalo mozzarella and authentic Italian tomato sauce as well.

XO recently opened this intimate and gorgeous little wine bar, they shocked us all by not only offering pizzas, but really good pizzas. They keep things refreshingly simple with a short menu, offering just one pizza option every day, the ‘pizza of the day’ for RMB 58.

Bang-for-your-buck wise, Pizza Taxi is probably the best value in the city. It’s great, authentic Italian pizza, for perhaps the lowest cost you’ll find it around town. The venue is smaller, intimate and low-key, adding to the Italian experience of the pizza scarffing.
