The 6 People You'll Find In Every Group Chat

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-27

Group chats, for those who use wechat they’re becoming an ever more prevalent part of the day. And while they have amazing benefits, they also have plenty of drawbacks. One thing that’s usually the same though, the types of people involved.

THE REGULATOR

This is usually the person who started the group, or someone in there who is just too busy for frivolousness. Their tagline is “guys, lets please keep messages relevant to the group, or you’ll be removed”. While they can be fun-hating party-spoilers, they are ultimately the only thing standing between a civil group discussion, and total group chat anarchy.

THE REBEL

For every stiff-lipped regulator there arises a populist trouble maker. Someone to stand up and say “no no my friend, we will post our stickers and promo flyers and bend your rules to their breaking point”. They may get removed from the chat but their legacy will remain long after they’re gone.

THE LURKER

This person has nothing to do with what’s going on, they never comment and no one really knows them. Whether it’s because they’re too afraid to leave, or they’re just hoping to get some new stickers, they lurk quietly in the shadows, terrified someone might @ them sooner or later.

THE SPAMMER

You thought this was going to be a low-key book exchange group, think again. Someone invited Tom into the group and Tom has some events he’d like to tell you about. There’s a DJ set on Friday, a sneaker launch on Saturday, and some thing on Sunday that doesn’t seem to have a name, time or location. And it’s easy to hate Tom, until you are the one with an event you need to promote.

STICKER DUDE

Every group has that one person, just waiting to drop the hottest new stickers. Whether or not they get away with it depends entirely on the context, how often they use them and how on-point they are. It’s a high-wire act that many try, but few succeed at.

THE SIDE CHATTERS

It’s a second-hand sale group of 200 people but these two have been talking about their dinner plans for 93 messages, what’s going on here? It’s not egregious enough to yell at them about, but it’s also not exactly chat-legal, should I say something or just wait for someone else too? Oh great, now the person who runs the group is talking about dinner with them as well.
