A New Perspective on Traditional Art at "The Gallery"

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-27

The Gallery is owned and run by ex advertising talents, SK Loke and Molly Lee, who opened it in 2010. You wouldn't know it from a first glance as The Gallery sits quietly along the graffiti strewn Moganshan lu. But, this is perhaps one of the more intriguing galleries you’ll come across, making it their mission to “democratize Chinese Art”, and transforming the idea of a traditional art gallery on its head.

SK and Molly are both Malaysian natives that used to work for creative agency Weiden & Kennedy. What bought this duo together is their shared aesthetics taste and a passion for art. They wanted to venture into the art/gallery world, but in a way that would be more fun, and in-line with their experiences and skill sets.

Upon opening The Gallery they realized that neither had any notable connections in the art or gallery world (or funding for that matter). But with uncertainly comes freedom, and they used that to build something entirely different. The resources they had: plenty of marketing experience, and countless contacts within the creative industry, including dozens of talented people from advertising, marketing, illustration and design.

The culmination of this new concept was Art2gether; a mish-mash of advertising marketing, web design and promotion, all in place to help promote art. The Gallery essentially operates as two things: a traditional gallery space with artwork, and a digital platform that promotes art in cutting edge ways.

So how does Art2gether work?  A perfect example is one business practice they’ve developed where they sell the usage rights of art along with the art itself. Numerous restaurants and businesses in Shanghai have bought an artwork from The Gallery, as well as the usage rights, which allows them to use the image on their promotional material, website, even their products… whatever they like. It’s a win-win, the company gets a creative boost and the artist gets more promotion.

The Gallery also has exhibitions and plenty of them. They usually display young/ up-and coming Chinese contemporary artwork, but they’ve just opened an exclusively Malaysian show, organized in conjunction with the Malaysian government (SK and Molly are the only Malaysian gallery owners in Shanghai by the way).

The exhibition is entitled ‘Contemporary Art In Interfusion and Intergrowth’. Opening night was November 9th, and the show will be on display until November 30th. You can find work from 11 artists, including the top two artists in Malaysia: Prof Awat Damit and Prof Tajuddin Ismail (Dato). As you can see from the photos, it’s well worth stopping by for a look:
