With the constant surge of new restaurants popping up all over Shanghai, it’s easy to forget about the old classics that have been around serving traditional Shanghai cuisine for the past 100 years! Let’s take a journey through time together and see what we may have been missing out on.


WANG BAO HE




Age: 256 years

Address: 603 Fuzhou Lu, near Zhejiang Zhong Lu, People’s Square district

Signature dishes: Hairy crabs (RMB 58) Crab meat steamed dumplings (RMB 30)

Wang Bao is Shanghai’s oldest restaurant, specializing in crab dishes and wine. Shanghai’s crab connoisseurs recognize this place as truly one of the best, and it has somehow managed to keep its crab recipe a secret for the entire 256 years!


HUXINTING TEAHOUSE




Age: 230 years

Address: 257 Yuyuan Lu, near Jiujiaochang Lu, in the Yu Gardens complex, Old Town (Yu Garden) district

Signature dishes: Small pyramid-shaped dumplings, Dried tofu

Huxinting Teahouse was originally built as part of the stunning decor for Yuyuan Garden, but was later converted into a teahouse. It really is fit for royalty, and even Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has dined here!


LAO ZHENG XING




Age: 154 years

Address: 556 Fuzhou Lu, near Zhejiang Zhong Lu

Signature dishes: Grass circles with oily eel (RMB 58)

Lao Zheng Xing was opened 154 years ago by a pair named Zhuzheng Ping and Cai Renxing. They’ve actually had to change the name of this restaurant not once, but twice due to copy-cats and imposters! It’s since been hailed the “king of restaurants”.

Age: 141 years

Address: 242 Fuyou Lu, near Liushi Lu, Huangpu district

Signature dishes: Eight treasures duck (RMB 158), Oily shrimp (RMB 88)

Shanghai Lao Restaurant provides the ultimate home comfort food for all those born and raised in Shanghai. Not only is the food top notch, but the decor and atmosphere has retained the traditional Chinese feel from when it first opened so long ago. 


LAO BANZHAI RESTAURANT




Age: 141 years

Address: 600 Fuzhou Lu, near Zhejiang Zhong Lu, People’s Square district

Signature dishes: Cured pork noodles (RMB16) , fish soup noodles (RMB30) , Cured pork (RMB12), Large meatballs (RMB10)

Shanghai specializes in crabs, and Lao Banzhai does not disappoint! Not only that, but it’s also the only place you can try fish soup noodles with fish plucked fresh from the Yangtze River! It is a bit more on the pricey side though.


DA FUGUI




Age: 140 years

Address: 1409 Zhonghua Lu, near Penglai Lu, Xuhui district

Signature dishes: Small wontons (RMB 4), Steamed dumplings (RMB 6), Pan-fried stuffed bun (RMB 4), Deep-fried pork chops (RMB 10) 



Da Fugui specializes in a range of Shanghai snacks, which could very easily mount up to become a full meal.


SHEN DACHENG




Age: 140 years

Address: Multiple locations

Signature dishes: Filled and rolled dumplings (RMB 2), Double-baked dumplings (RMB3)  Green dumplings  (RMB18) Glutinous rice dumplings (RMB3)



Shen Dacheng originally started out as a simple stop-and-go snack shop. It’s retained its original menu, but is constantly adding new flavors to keep up with modern tastes.


DEXING RESTAURANT




Age: 137 years

Address: 471 Guangdong Lu, near Hubei Lu, Bund Area

Signature dishes: Braised hoof noodles (RMB37), Steamed meat and gravy dumplings (RMB10), Meat mooncakes (RMB3.5)

When it first opened, Dexing Restaurant focused much of its menu on shrimp dishes, whereas now it prefers soup noodles and hooves. It may not sound all that appetizing, but the Shanghainese have loved every bit of it for 137 years!


HONG ZHANGXING




Age: 125 years

Address: 1 Yunnan Nan Lu, near Yan’an Dong Lu, People’s Square district

Signature dishes: Steamed lamb hot pot RMB38), onion pie (RMB3), Ggarlic lamb ribs (RMB28)

This is Shanghai’s first ever lamb hot pot restaurant! They still cook the lamb in the exact same way they did 125 years ago, so you’d be stupid not to give this age-old dish a try!


YUE SONG LOU




Age: 105 years

Address: 99 Jiuxiaochang Lu, near Fuyou Lu, Huangpu district

Signature dishes: Chinese crabapple cake (RMB5), Mushroom dumplings (RMB2.5), Mushroom noodles (RMB15)



All you struggling vegetarians out there, it’s time to jump for joy! Believe it or not, this is a Chinese vegetarian restaurant. Even hardcore meat lovers should enjoy this one thanks to the delicious freshness of all the ingredients used.
