40 Things to Do in Shanghai for RMB50 or Less

You may have noticed that Shanghai has a lot of stuff going on. Some of that stuff is expensive BUT, there are tons of ways to spend an afternoon without emptying your bank account. Here’s a solid list of 40 things to do for RMB 50 or less.


SHANGHAI BOTANICAL GARDEN




There’s nothing more pleasant and life-affirming than walking around smelling flowers. Shanghai Botanical garden has a huge selection, making It a beautiful way to spend an afternoon (especially if you’re on a date) for under RMB 50. 


Price: RMB  15 for the greenhouse exhibition only, RMB 21 for the bonsai garden only, RMB 5 for the  orchids only, RMB 40 for all attractions.

SHANGHAI  ZOO



Everyone loves a zoo right? Unless you’re an animal activist or some weirdo, what better way to spend time than walking around admiring the majesty of the animal kingdom.

QIBAO ANCIENT TOWN



Take a visit to the beautiful scenic watertown of Qibao and walk around the meandering canals.

SHANGHAI NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM 


 

If you lovenatural history (especially the part where there were huge dinosaurs everywhere) this is your spot. This museum is top of the line and has more than enough to keep you busy all day taking instagram photos.

FERRY BOAT ACROSS THE HUANGPU RIVER

This building was once a slaughterhouse, now it’s mostly used for events. The architecture is really one-of-a-kind in Shanghai and it’s zig-zagging maze-like pathways and halls should definitely be experienced at least once. And it’s free, so why not.

YU GARDEN

 


This iconic tourist attraction is iconic for a reason: it’s inexpensive and awesome. For just RMB 40 you’re time-warped back to an ancient beauty that’s hard to find anywhere else in the city.

NANXIANG STEAMED BUN RESTAURANT

 


It’s easy to find Xiaolongbao in Shanghai, but to find epic, famous, perfect ones… that’s more difficult. Look no further than Nanxiang, for RMB 22 you’ll get 16 of their perfectly made xiaolongbao.

DAHUCHUN

 



Shengjian are amazing no matter where you get them, but here, here you’ll get proper traditional ones, made the same way for decades and rightfully so. RMB 7 gets you 4 of these fried delights.

WALK AROUND HISTORIC WUKANG ROAD

  


Wukang lu is probably best known for the iconic Wukang mansion, which has been home to numerous celebrities, singers and actors over the years. While the mansion is probably more than RMB 50, walking around and admiring the scenic area is totally free.

FARINE



This fall Shanghai got lucky, a bunch of new bakeries opened up all around the city. One that’s been warming our hearts and filling our stomachs for quite a while now though is Farine. There’s a wide selection of treats and goodies under RMB 50, including their butter croissant that almost melts in your mouth.

XINTIANDI



Walking around the hippest part of Xintiandi is the very definition of stimulus overload. There’s so much to see, so many people, restaurants, bars, little dogs, interesting style, it can be a bit overwhelming. If you’re in to people watching, this is a great choice, and it’s free to walk around.

Just making the cut is Pree’s unbelievable vanilla ice cream for RMB 42. It’s delicious and you won’t regret it.

HENGSHAN ROAD



Hengshan road is a bewildering mishmash of old and new. You’ll find mega chain restaurants, insanely gaudy nightclubs, bowling alleys, flower sellers, street food… all of the things that make a Shanghai street worth walking around and gawking at late at night.

SHANGHAI BREWERY



What do we need to say about this, beer is great, Shanghai Brewery has great beer, there you go!

M50 CREATIVE PARK

 


What was once a maze of textile manufacturing buildings now has over 75 art galleries, artist studios and other creative spaces. Almost all of them art free entry, and the entire surrounding area is a graffiti street definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already.

UNDEFINE

 



This coffee shop also has an art exhibition every month or two, and the space itself is absolutely gorgeous. Even though not normally prone to taking photos of their surroundings will be sorely tempted here.

RIDING A MOBIKE

 


If you don’t have a bike (or even if you do but don’t feel like using it) Mobike is awesome. RMB 1 gets you an hour on the orange excitement, the only question is where will you take it?

SHANGHAI MUSEUM 



Shanghai Museum would be worth any entry fee, lucky for us it doesn’t have one! Go explore thousands of years of Asian history, artifacts and antiques at this enormous and beautiful venue.

SHOOT POOL



Go play pool or snooker at this incredible puxi pool hall. At RMB 30 for one hour it’s well worth the money, especially if you go with a bunch of friends.

HAVE A CUP OF FLAT WHITE 



Price: 20 RMB for a cup of Latte

TIAN ZI FANG



Tianzifang is pretty touristy, but it got that popular for a reason. The winding alleyways are easy to get lost in and there’s an interesting shop, restaurant or bar around every turn. Whether you want great Indian food, ice cream, an old propaganda poster or just to walk around and people watch, this is a great place to go waste a day.

XUJIAHUI CATHOLIC CHURCH



You don’t need to be a practicing Christian to go to church. This space has some of the most beautiful architecture in the city (if you’re into that sort of thing). Best of all, it’s totally free!

TAKING PICTURES LIKE A MOVIE STAR ON GARDEN BRIDGE OF SHANGHAI

 


Garden bridge is responsible for some pretty epic Shanghai photographs. Go take some of your own, just be careful!

GUCUN PARK



Most parks are free around this city but this one is not, and there’s a reason, it’s maybe the most scenic one in the city. The cherry blossoms are enormous and each spring it becomes a pink wonderland.

 BUND MUSEUM OF ART IN SHANGHAI



The Bund Musuem of Art always has a killer exhibition on display, often featuring some of the top international artists. It’s RMB 30 to get in, but quite worth it, even if the artwork isn’t great, the architecture alone is worth seeing.

SHANGHAI SPECIAL PASTRY-WANGJIASHA



These weird little jelly=ish rolls are awesome and should be eaten by everyone.

GARDEN BOOKS



Sadly there aren’t many English language book stores around the city. Lucky for us Garden is one of them, they’re not huge but they’ve certainly got quality over quantity. If you can’t find something you’re interested in there then… well… go write your own damn book.

CHINA ARTS MUSEUM

 


Iconic, gorgeous, symbolic, and… free!

TAOYUANJUANCUN-TAIWAN STYLE AND FULL-DAY BREAKFAST

 


This Taiwanese restaurant has the goods. Go enjoy their breakfast menu, ranging between RMB6-25 and worth every yi mao.

SHANGHAI REDTOWN- ART  CREATIVE COMBINATION PARK

COOL DOCKS




The cool docks are…cool. Go spend an afternoon walking around this unique little hip haven right along the river.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF THE PARK

 


At pretty much any park in the city you can find old people dancing, instruments being played, generally bizarre and amazing parade like behavior and people watching, all free!

BUY ANYTHING AT MINISO

 


This shameless Muji rip-off it the best, they’ve got tons of great stuff, most of which is under RMB 50. Go find a store and go nuts!

WALK ON THE BUND




It’s free and it will make you feel like you’re living in the future or on another planet, a must if you’ve never done it. Even if you have done it, it never stops being strange and amazing.

MARRIAGE MARKET

 


Go watch families try to set their kids and grandkids up, advertising them like used cars. Participating is optional but you better make sure you have your stats in order, competition is stiff.

GO TO THE MARKETS

 


There are numerous huge markets in Shanghai, the camera market, electronic market, flower market, yadda yadda. We’ll make it easy for you, look at the end of this article under ‘recommended articles’ and you’ll find a list of all of them.

RIDE THE BUS

 


The bus is RMB 2 per ride, get on one and see where it goes, what the hell else do you have to do?


PORTUGUESE EGG TART AT LILLIAN’S BAKERY

They’re delicious and cheap, and Lillian’s Bakery might just have the best in town.

EAT A JIANBING AT ADA’S ONION PANCAKE



 

Few delights are more simply and fast than getting a Jianbing. If you don’t already know, get to know it. Even if you don’t speak any chinese, just point at it and they’ll make you one, usualy costing 4 or 5 RMB.
