15 FREE Ways To Enjoy The Bund

2016-11-30 ShanghaiWOWeng

Every tourist that comes to Shanghai absolutely has to go to The Bund. It boasts the skyline that the city is renowned for, not to mention tons of cool things to see and do. Unfortunately for a lot of visitors, many of the attractions are either unknown, or just too expensive… however. There are some amazing options to help you enjoy the Bund without spending a single yuan!

1. SEE THE BULL

Sure you can take photos with the bull, but the real fun here is watching other people take photos with the bull. Watch as they bump into each other, try to climb on or under it, check to see if it has genitals (it does), and the security guards constantly yell at people not to get on top of it.

2. CUSTOMS HOUSE BELL

It doesn’t just look beautiful, it sounds beautiful! Listen to the bell ringing in the Customs House – it chimes to the music of ‘The East is Red’, a north Shaanxi folk song.

Address: No.13 Zhongshan Dongyi Road,

3.WANDER AROUND AIMLESSLY

It seems obvious but you’d be surprised how many hidden gems you’ll stumble across if you simply wander around with no plans, turn down the side streets, walk into random buildings. Worst case scenario: you walk into some place and they tell you to leave.

4.TELECOM MUSEUM

Go try your hand at using old school phone switches in this beautiful four-story Renaissance-style building. The building is mostly used today for the Bangkok Bank and the Royal Thai Consulate General, but the Telecom Museum is still there with all the old equiptment to make you realize how far we’ve come.

Address: No.7 on the Bund

Hours: 9:00am to 4:30pm

Tel: 021 3331 1122

5.ROCKBUND ART MUSEUM

This world-class art museum always has something worth checking out, and it’s free so why the hell wouldn’t you?

Address: 20 Huqiu Road

Hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm Tuesday-Sunday

Tel: 21 3310 9985

6.FIND A ROOFTOP

There are dozens of roof terraces to relax and enjoy the view, even the ones that charge or have restaurants you can at least stay for a minute and snap a photo before being kicked out.

7.HUANGPU PARK & PEOPLE’S MEMORIAL

You could make an argument that this isn’t even actually a park, but it’s close enough. Right along the river, before you get to Waibaidu Bridge you’ll find this little green gem with trees, flowers and most importantly: amazing views, especially at night.

And hey, after you’re done at the park, take a stroll across the famous Waibaidu bridge. This bridge was built in 1908 and crosses over the area where Suzhou creek splits off of the Huangpu river. During World War II the bridge was the de facto border between the Japanese controlled north, and the more internationally settled south.

This is probably the most eye-catching of all the bund buildings, the HSBC building is beautiful outside and in. The building was completed in 1923 and was the second largest building in the world at the time.

Address: Bund 12

10. CHECK OUT THE BOATS

There are boats everywhere along the river, from enormous barges to passenger ferries and private yachts. There’s even a ferry terminal along the bund where you can ride across the river for RMB 2, but watching is free of charge.

11. SHILIUPU COMMERCIAL CENTRE

This mall/amusement arcade/bizarre shopping area has plenty of things to look at. Aside from the gorgeous, futuristic outdoor structures, they also have an indoor shop and showcase to exhibit Shanghai's dock culture over the past several decades.

12.FIND SOME SCAM ARTISTS

They’re not too hard to pick out, it’s usually a pair of young girls who ask foreigners for help taking a photo, then they’ll ask if you want to go to an authentic tea ceremony or something along those lines. Then they’ll overcharge you and try to scam you out of a bunch of money. If you’re looking for something truly adventurous, try to watch some of the con artists at work, you can even save a helpless tourist or two while you’re at it.

13. TAKE A ROMANTIC STROLL

The bund has a long civilian walkway, why not use it? And what better way to use it than taking a romantic stroll with one of your tinder dates, or your spouse, or whoever.

14.COOL DOCKS

The cool docks are… cool, really. They’ve got great views, cool shops and restaurants and hip people walking around.

15. GO SEE AN EPIC SUNRISE

If you’re standing along the bund (the Puxi side obviously) the sunrise comes up from behind Lujiazui during most of the year, this makes for some pretty epic silhouetted sunrise scenes… unless it’s too polluted to see the sun, in which case there’s not much we can do for you sorry.
