What's The Deal With Tock's?
There are few things more satisfying in life than a big, fat Reuben sandwich. So, if you’re like us you were quite alarmed to see the drama unfold at the Tock’s this past September.
If you somehow missed it, Brian Tock, nephew of owner Richard Tock, had a very public falling out with ownership and staff. After helping the Montreal-style Deli restaurant become enormously successful in Shanghai, he left in dramatic fashion, even being (according to him) ‘banned from the premises’ while blasting former business partners on social media and in the press.
Somewhat tempered public statements from both sides were eventually released, but a lot of gossip and he-said she-said talk swirled for weeks afterwards. The story was no doubt amplified by the fact that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Henan lu location just three weeks before the drama unfolded.
Almost four months later, it may be safe to say the dust has settled. With Brian gone there were some serious questions about how the business would continue on, and whether or not it would maintain the same standards and quality. We went back recently to see for ourselves how things were going and were thrilled to find the smoked meats, Poutine, Reubens and pretty much everything else, were as awesome as ever. So carry on Reuben lovers, we will certainly be going back again.
