Movies to Get Excited For in 2017

It’s impossible to predict all the crazy things that might happen in 2017. When it comes to movies though, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Here’s a list of  films we can’t wait to see in 2017, whether on DVD, streaming or in the theaters.

JANUARY

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Release: 27 January 2017

Cast: Milla Jovorich, Ali Larter, Ruby Rose

It’s hard to believe it, but this 14-year series is finally coming to an end this year with their final chapter, expected to be the craziest one yet.

T2 Trainspotting

Release: 27 January 2017

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Ewan Bremner, Robert Carlyle

20 years after it’s original release, 4 Scottish punks reunite as Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor’s character) attempts to make amends for his past acts.

Renegades

Release: 20 January 2017 (Germany)

Cast: J.K. Simmons, Sullivan Stapleton, Ewan Bremner

Produced and written by Luc Besson, Renegades stars a group of Navy Seals who found hidden treasure in a lake under the small town, and the drama that followed thereafter.

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Release: 20 January 2017 (America)

Cast: Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen, Samuel L. Jackson, Kris Wu

Vin Diesel is back as Xander Cage, and this round, he is up against antagonist Donnie Yen in this action-packed series. The film also stars up and coming Chinese actor, Kris Wu.

Underworld: Blood Wars

Release: 6 January 2017

Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Tobias Menzies

Continuing her fight against the Lycans and the Vampires, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is back for a new instalment of fights and battles in the Underworld.

FEBRUARY

Fifty Shades Darker

Release: 10 February 2017

Cast: Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson

House wives everywhere rejoice, the sequel is finally here. A continuation of the hit film, Fifty Shades of Grey, Anastasia attempts to get over Christian Grey who wants to win her back so he can do a bunch of weird shit with her in his sex room as the two meander through poorly written dialouge. 

Lego Batman Movie

Release: 10 February 2017

Lego Batman is a batman, made of legos. Watch in delight as he goes on a journey of self-discovery, working with friends to save Gotham City from The Joker. 

The Dark Tower

Release: 17 February 2017

Cast: Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Abbey Lee

Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, the film tells the story of 11-year old Jake who stumbkes upon another dimension, Mid-World, and sets out to finish a quest to save the dimension from being destroyed.

John Wick: Chapter 2

Release: 10 February 2017

Cast: Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Bridgey Moynahan

Hitman John Wick is back in action after a former associate wanted control over the guild. The hit movie once again stars Keanu Reeves, and is directed and writted by the same director and writer of the original John Wick.

MARCH

Wolverine: Old Man Logan

Release: 3 March 2017

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart

Logan is back, in what’s billed as Hugh Jackman’s final apperence in the role. This time, he must protect a young girl, Laura, whilst defeating Reavers, a group of criminal cyborgs. The film will be R-rated, thank god.

Kong: Skull Island

Release: 10 March 2017

Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson

Skull Island is set in the 70’s and follows a team of explorers as the discover a new island with a huge secret: an unrealisticly enormous gorilla who is attracted to normal size human women.

Beauty and the Beast

Release: 17 March 2017

Cast: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans

The most anticipated Disney film of the year, this is the real-life adaptation of the 1991 animation film. Relive your childhood and belt out to your favorite Disney tunes.

Ghost in the Shell

Release: 31 March 2017

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Piou Asbaek

An absolute classic in both the science fiction AND animated film world, Ghost in the Shell has been remade in live action. The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Major, commander of Section 9 who is up against Hanka Robotic’s AI tech. The original Japanese manga version was released in 1995.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Release: 24 March 2017 (America)

Cast: Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Katie McGrath

Set in the 15th Century, the film revolves around the legendary King Arthur and his adventures.

Power Rangers

Release: 24 March 2017 (America)

Cast: Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks, Dacre Montgomery

Adapted from the world renowned Japanese superhero cartoon, Power Rangers will follow high school student Jason Lee Scott as him and his friends fight to save the world.

Smurfs: The Lost Village

Release: 31 March 2017 

Voice Cast: Demi Lovato, Danny Pudi

The latest masterpiece by the director of Shrek 2, Kelly Asbury, the film is about Smurfette journey to finding her calling within the village.

The Fate of the Furious

Release: 14 April 2017 

Cast: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham

The star-studded cast is back (minus one), and with Charlize Theron as the antagonist, watch as Dom and his crew dominate on the streets once again.

Gifted

Release: 12 April 2017 

Cast: Chris Evans, Jenny Slate, Octavia Spencer

Hanging up his Captain America suit, Chris Evans takes on the role a father raising a child prodigy, who happens to be the daughter of his late sister. 

MAY

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Release: 5 May 2017 

Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Salanda, Vin Diesel

Back into the galaxy, the team struggles to keep themselves together while helping Peter learn more about his parents.

Terminator 6

Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold returns, with director Justin Lin taking on the science fiction series in it’s 6th instalment.

Pirates of the Carribean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pursed by an old rival, Captain Jack Sparrow goes on an adventure to find the Trident of Poseidon to gain control of the seas and defeat his rival.

Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott takes his franchise back with this follow up to Promenthus. The crew finds an untouched island on their trip around the galaxy, and comes to realize it has been inhabited by monstrous creatures out to hunt them.

An international Space Station team learns about extra-terrestrial life on Mars and how they might potentially harm humans and the Earth.

Annabelle 2

Cast: Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Baterman

Annabelle returns, this time to an orphanage run by a dollmaker and his wife. And she is set out to terrorize the children and couple.

JUNE

Toy Story 4

To find Woody’s love interest, Bo Peep, Woody and Buzz set out on an adventure of a lifetime in this coming of age story.

Cars 3

With a new generation of racers, Lightning McQueen is out of the spotlight. With the help of technician Cruz Ramirez, he pits himself against new rival, Jackson Storm in a battle of a lifetime.

Transformers 5: The Last Night

Fifth instalmment of the Transformers film series, the movie shows the ongoing war between humans and machine in explosive fashion, also expect a slew of obnoxious product placements and scenes that drag on too long and have too much CGI, should be great though.

Despicable Me 3

Cast: Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove

This summer, Gru gets involved in some sibling rivalry with his twin brother, Dru, and battles against Balthazar Bratt, a supervillan bent on world domination. Can the minions and him defeat the bad guys this time round?

The Mummy

Release: 9 June 2017 

Cast: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella

Written by Alex Kkurtzman and starring A-list actor, Tom Cruise, keep your eyes peeled as the film is expected to be darker and more terrifying than its previous instalment. Brenden Frasier is not in it. 

World War Z Sequel

Release: 9 June 2017 

Cast: Brad Pitt

Another zombie apocalyptic movie, the film is unlike the first instalment and will tap on the imagination and creativity of Max Brooks.

Wonder Woman

Release: 2 June 2017 

Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright

Amazon princess Diana meets Steve Trevor, an American military pilot washed ashore. As she learns about the ongoing war, Diana sets out to stop the war and becomes Wonder Woman.

JULY

War for the Planet of the Apes

Release: 14 July 2017 (North America)

Cast: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Judy Greer

After directing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Matt Reeves is back directing its sequel. Changing up the plot, the film will follow Caesar as he battles himself and the humans in a war that will affect his species and the planet.

Fantastic Four 2

Release: 19 July 2017 (America)

Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara

The cast is back after a disastrous box office performance in 2015, despite bombing it was actually a good movie and we’re excited for the sequel.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Release: 19 July 2017 

Cast: Tom Holland, Robert Downey Junior, Marisa Tomei

Following a brief appearance on Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man is back in full force, this time with the help of Iron Man to fight crimes and a new threat, the Vulture.

Dunkirk

British American film Dunkirk is the latest masterpiece by award-winning director/producer, Christopher Nolan. It tells the fatefull tale of the Dunkirk evacuation, an 8 day evacuation of Allied soldiers which saved 338,226 lives.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Release: 21 July 2017 (France)

Cast: Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen

An adaption of the classic 1967 French Cult Comic, Valerian, this science fiction film incorporates elements of adventure, space and time travel. The film features the beautiful pairing of Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, as well as lady favorite Kris Wu.

OCTOBER

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Release: 6 October 2017 (America)

Cast: Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Julianne Moore

Presumably dead agent, Harry Hart (Colin Firth), comes back to life and works with Gary Unwin (Taron Egerton). This time, they are up against Poppy (Julianne Moore).

Blade Runner 2049

Release: 6 October 2017 (America)

Cast: Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto

A dream team cast and crew for this blade runner sequel, which takes place 30 years after the original. We are most excited for this one.

Saw: Legacy

Release: 27 October 2017 (America)

Cast: Leigh Whannell

Writers of Piranha 3D and Sorority Row, Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger’s latest script will be directed by James Wan, and will bring gore and horror to a new level.

NOVEMBER

The Croods 2 

Release: 3 November 2017 (America) | 22 December 2017 (China)

Featuring the original cast who voiced the first instalment, The Croods 2 will show the Croods life on the beach and their new adventures ahead.

Thor: Ragnarok

Release: 3 November 2017 (America)

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo

Directed by Taika Waititi, the third Thor film will star the Hulk and Dr Strange as they help Thor find his father, Odin, and battle against inergalatactic enemies.

Justic League

Release: 17 November 2017 (North America)

Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa

Superhero film follows Superman: Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman, and stars an ensemble cast including Ben Affleck and Amy Adams in their fight to protect the world.

DECEMBER

Star Wars: Episode VIII

Release: 15 December 2017

Cast: Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac

Prequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the eighth instalment of the franchise will adopt the 70s and 80s version of the original three-part series.
