Newly Opened Bombay Bistro Brings Modern Indian Cuisine To Life

Meet Bombay Bistro, the new Oriental gem in Shanghai. Taking over the space left behind from Bocado, the design is exquisite, colorful with modern twist on Indian cuisine. Once inside this great spot, you can surprise your senses with a fresh combination of leaves and spices.


The Concept

 


Shanghai has many Indian restaurants serving traditional cuisine . Though the trend in big cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore etc is changing to more creative Indian cuisine. Combining new and old these new young breed of chefs are making the Indian food more exciting and colorful.Bombay Bistro makes an effort to bring this progressive Indian food to all food lovers in Shanghai 

 



It s not a movement against the tradition, but a parallel fresh breath. An explosion of taste and flavor which just reached Shanghai. It has a name; progressive Indian cuisine. While keeping the tradition, mixing old and new.

 



The Team

 


Chef Jiten Singh and the Bombay Bistro’s man at the bar Anthony Philip used to work for the popular Indian F&B Group Olive.  Their passion is to create, and explore the boundaries of conventional cooking. 

 



The Venue

 



Bombay Bistro has transformed the earlier Bocado venue  with amazing light coming from large windows, matching perfectly with the turquoise, purple and golden glow. The design is impeccable and detail oriented.  Chairs are comfortable with couch seating, made more appealing with the subtle colors of the pillows.  This  is a nicely executed blend between traditional and modern. 




The Food


Bombay Bistro’s cuisine is simple, but packed with colors and a touch of spice. You won’t go crazy looking at an extended 200 pages menu. Food is upfront and specific to the point.  The dishes offer a variety catered to specific foodie types. You can find vegan and gluten free on the menu. Classics include  butter chicken, nans and samosa. As well as regional cuisine that is rare to find amongst other Indian restaurants. The cuisine is well-orchestrated with an explosion of colors, flavors and spices hailing straight from India, served in a trendy and glamorous venue. Let the fireworks begin!


Snacks



 Mixed Poppadoms RMB58  *vegetarian friendly 


What are Poppadoms? Thin, crispy, disc-shaped dough eaten as appetizer. They offer a variety of different Poppadoms based on the seeds. This is a dish that is originally made from lentil and sago. The best way to eat it , is to dip this in the tasty  inhouse sauces; roasted pineapple, strawberry, orange and mint chutneys. Light and savory, it is a subtle mix between salt, spicy and sweet you can easily share with 4 people, one poppadoms per person.  Sauces can be a little spicy, but don’t freak out, the spicy level is perfectly handle. Your tongue won’t burn off.  

 


Gulukand Dahi Kebab RMB78 *vegetarian friendly 


A must try, creative delicates both hearty and subtle (yes it can be both). Wait for it, you can’t guess what is inside, a base of crème fraiche mixed with rose marmalade, mint, grapefruit before being fried with a paneer crust.  Flowers, leaves, cheese, fruit, fried, no kidding. The result is divine if you are a food creativity enthusiast. FYI, Paneer is a Persian origin fresh cheese, which is somewhat similar to Yunnanese goat cheese.  


Fresh from the Tandoori 


 

Tikka Trio – Chicken or panner RMB108 *vegetarian friendly 


Tikka is a brochette of marinated meat cutlets. The most popular version  uses chicken, however you can ask for some of their vegetarian options. There’s a trio of marinated recipes: classic, creamy Malai and mustard seed.  The meat melts in your mouth and the mint seasoning enhances its flavor. A dish to share with three people. 


 Mains 

 

Butter chicken RMB118


International comfort food is difficult to resist. Chicken marinated for hours with a cream and spice mixture in a tandoor. Wide range of spices including garlic, garam masala, lemon, coriander, cumin, chili, ginger… all mixed together creating some delightful new flavors. Served with three different kinds of nan: garlic, buttery and herbal. Soak the nan and top it. You go it. It s delicious. Very hearty dish you can’t handle by yourself.


Rice 

 

Bombay Berry Pilau RMB98 *vegetarian friendly 


Here we have a traditional, century-old Iranian recipe which can be prepared with Lamb, Chicken or Veggies. Marinated base with star anis, cinnamon and cumin topped with basmati rice sour-dried berries and cumin seasoning. 


The Drinks 



American Dreams RMB80


It is, and is not, an old fashion, somehow at the same time. Reserved for those who enjoy smokey bourbon flavor without the bitterness. The harshness of the bourbon is well balanced by the cherry and Cinnamon Infusion. Higher notes with citrus and Bitters. 



Oriental Orchid RMB80


Original recipe which changed from the classic Moscow mule, spritz and martini… Here, the main body is composed of Star anise, Gin & Aperol. Soft floral touches from  Raspberry, Orange, Kaffir . Definitely feminine and sweet.
