Segway Users Face New Fines & Restrictions

2017-01-16 ShanghaiWOWeng

Starting on March 25th of this year, new traffic restrictions will hit Shanghai. Segways and other similar transportation devices will be officially banned on roadways and bike lanes. These include electric scooters (the ones riders must stand up on) as well as hover boards and electric unicycles. Riders will face fines ranging between RMB 100-1000.

Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen made news when they banned electric scooters and segways (or at least tried to) this past August. Riders caught during that period were either issued verbal warnings or fined RMB 10. Some other cities have experimented with varying restrictions and fines since then, such as Xiamen.

These transportation devices will remain legal in “closed communities and indoor courts” according to Shanghai traffic police.
