New VPN Restriction Announced

2017-01-24 ShanghaiWOWeng

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced Sunday that beginning immediately, use of VPNs and special cable connections within China must be approved by the government. The move is part of a push to “clean-up” the country's internet over the next 18 months.

The announcement and corresponding regulations are quite vague, so it’s not clear exactly how these new rules will be enforced. However, there are some indications that Chinese officials are looking to crack down on companies providing VPN services to individuals, as opposed to the individuals themselves.

For now, don’t expect there to be much of a change to your VPN service, speed or usage, but it is definitely something to keep an eye on over the next few months.

If you need a VPN to access the latest TV shows, read our first article for some help with that.
