15 Signs You Know You Are in Pudong

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-28

There are some pretty noticeable differences between the old alleyways of Puxi and the (occasionally) futuristic-looking Pudong. If you notice any of the following features, there’s a good chance you have somehow ended up in Pudong.

Streets you’ve absolutely never heard of before

What the hell is that, how do I say it, where have I ended up?

Helloooooooooo. Is this place open? Did it just open? Did it just close? Is it about to shutter the windows? Is it an actual store or an experimental art project? If you find yourself asking these questions there’s a good chance you’re in Pudong.

Lujiazui especially, but even most areas of Pudong look so new that it’s like living in a dream, a dream that has some bad smells occasionally.

There’s a ton of them in Puxi of course, but in Pudong it’s as if they run the district.

No not the animals, the ticket scalpers. Sure they’re in Puxi, but in Pudong their discreteness is all but entirely gone.

Cab drivers get a lil sketchy

By and large the cab drivers of Shanghai are incredible, hard-working people that deserve the utmost respect. Once you’re in Pudong though, especially if you’re a foreigner, cabbies seem a little bit more… how do we say this… likely to try to fuck you over.

Enormous Parks

They’ve got the space and they built this part of the city essentially from scratch, that means they put a lot more thought into large, expansive parks.

Slightly cleaner air

A little more breathing room is actually a thing.

Empty Streets

Take a nap on the highway.

There’s a Taco Bell

Possibly the only reason you’d intentionally go, other than an airport or some swanky business meeting.
