New Brut Cake Cafe: Quirky, Creative & Delicious

2017-02-08 ShanghaiWOWeng

We love lavish, luxurious dining, but the truth is that our favorite places are usually the ones that feel like home. They’re comfortable, quirky, affordable, and good for any time of the day. While there might not be a ton of these in Shanghai, there is a new one called Brut Cake Cafe!

The Concept

Brut Cake is an adorable and innovative Shanghai-based brand founded by Taiwan-born Nicole Teng.  After a successful career at Ogilvy & Mather, Nicole reoriented herself onto a more poetic and artistic path.  As the name suggests, Brut Cake Cafe does indeed have cake, as well as other amazing food. But they’ll also surprise visitors with their quirky and creative refurbished furniture.

With patience, creativity and an array of natural materials from Jiangshu province, they give old furniture a new life and a soul. Nicole believes objects have a personality, and so these adorable smiling faces invite us to discover the uniqueness of each piece. It also lets us rethink our own relationship with everyday objects, a refreshing split from Shanghai’s fast-paced consumer culture.

The furniture side of things as been around and building a buzz for a few years at their Anfu Lu location, they’ve even had the occasional famous face drop by to make a purchase.

As part of their natural development, Brut Cake was eager to create an establishment where they could fully experiment with their philosophy. They found the desired harmony through Priscilla and Jun; an F&B couple with unmatched high taste and sensitivity. This is how the recently opened Brut Cake Cafe on Yuyuan lu began.

Brut cake Cafe’s furniture all comes from Brut Cake, from the plates to the trays. The wood-based decoration creates a comforting and homely style where you feel totally welcomed. The place has a young, innocent and cheerful soul you can feel when you step into. Perhaps that comes from the wall of cheering mugs, or from the unexpected and charming table face or chair faces, or maybe all of the above.

The Chef

Both F&B stars in Shanghai, Priscilla and Jun used to manage Amuse restaurant. Tireless culinary researchers, the couple has spent time as chefs, foddies, bloggers, managers, and even journalists. Brut Cake Cafe puts to use their full array of experience in downtown and we are glad to finally see it!

The Cuisine

With love and intense creative passion, Brut Cake cafe’s team gives soul to their venue as well as the menu. The cuisine is an amusing fusion between western and Asian inspiration. In both cultures are ingredients which are chabuduo similar. Sausage, bread, pancakes, cookies, vegetables… June and Priscilla took advantage of these differences to create new dishes which are as delicious as they are creative. Nothing pretentious to expect; everything is made from scratch. Great ingredients, carefully selected without preservatives, in order to make a home style cuisine, tasty and healthy.

You can come any time for any occasion. A breakfast set is currently in the works so it’s not available yet, BUT, they begin serving coffee at 8:30 am. The coffee alone is worth the trip, they use only high quality beans and serve a range of classis, including lattes, single origin coffees, matcha green tea lattes, red velvet chocolate, and warm-spiced latte. Lunch is available from 11am to 2:30pm, RMB48 for a salad, RMB62 for pasta or Grains, or RMB68 for their signature Manwich. We can’t wait to tell you more about!

Lunch

Manwich with triple-cooked fries and daily salad RMB68

The Manwich is an example of their inspiration. It’s a blend between the local Mantou (done with wholemeal flour though) and a sandwich with meat, cheese and salad.  I got a mantou… I got a sandwich... aw, Manwich style!  Best of all, and most importantly when it comes to food: it’s totally delicious.

Green Canard roasted duck thigh, bok choy pesto penne RMB62

Same same but different pene pesto. Fulfilling bowl of pasta with roasted duck (aka canard in French), cherry tomatoes, pinch of cheese  and bok choy base pesto (Chinese cabbage). It’s comforting, filling, perfect to warm you up during winter… this unpretentious dish will instantly capture your heart. The RMB62 even includes a daily salad, side dish and fruits. Affordable and healthy lunch option!

Sweets and Coffee

As Brut Cake cafe, is not a pleasantly unconventional spot, you have a drop in even if it’s just for a coffee and a look around. Their drinks and their dessert are highly recommended.

Brut Cake RMB25

You won’t find any masterpiece quadruple stacked delicacies here. “Brut” means raw in French and they aim for a more practical, compact and rustic offering. The signature Brut Cake is the perfect example. Made with organic jujube honey, it has a chunky consistence without overdoing it with the sweet taste. RMB 25 and worth every yi mao!

For something easier to share and perfectly paring your tea, we recommend on (or all) of their four flavors of cookies. They’ve got chocolate Chip Sea Salt, Coconut black sesame (salty sweet, still melting in the middle), Green matcha (with green tea aftertaste), and Double chocolate bacon.  Again nothing perfectly shaped, it looks like it was made in some loving family kitchen, and in many ways it was.

They’ve also got waffles, as well as daily dessert specials you can find behind their counter.
