20 Reasons Why Shanghai is Seriously Romantic

When you think of romantic cities, Paris is probably the first one you think of. But don’t count Shanghai out! We might not have the Eiffel tower or Gondalas, but there are dozens of reasons Shanghai is an amazing city for romance. 

1. Beautiful streets

One way to be romantic that has existed forever: going on a walk. In this city, that will never get old, whether it be the bund, a park or even just some unexplored little neighborhood, you’ll never run out of places to stroll together. 

2. Find Hidden Gems 

One of the most romantic parts about living in a city with a partner is that you can have your own little favorite spots. Whether it be a hole-in-the-wall bar or an incredible hidden restaurant, there are thousands of little spots to make your own.

3. Picture perfect scenes

If you’re the type of couple that likes taking photos together you are definitely in luck. Shanghai has got to be one of the most interesting and photogenic cities on the planet, what could be a better backdrop for a romantic selfie together?

Winters here get cold! Especially considering how poorly insulated most apartments are, what could be more romantic than cuddling up to share body heat for three months?

Shanghai certainly isn’t known for its incredible weather. So when it’s cold or rainy, or both, the city’s long list of delivery services make it easy to stay in for a romantic evening indoors!

6. Never Get Bored

Doing new things together builds trust and appreciation (or occasionally makes you realize you hate each other). It’s hard to imagine you and your partner would even run out of new things to try in Shanghai, from food to museums to bars, there’s an endless amount of new experiences waiting for you.

Shanghai is great but one of the greatest things about it is how easy and cheap it is to come and go. From high speed trains to cheap flights to  Vietnam, Thailand, what could be more romantic that a weekend getaway?

Shanghai has quite a lot of mansions and villas. Unlike many other cities though, you can actually go inside a lot of these elegant establishments. Some are museums, some have incredible restaurants, either way its perfect for a romantic evening spent feeling like a millionaire couple.

Shanghai is city full of international influences. Walk around the Bund, and it is like you are in London. Walk along Wuding Lu and it’s like walking around the East Village in New York, or how about the tree-laden Hengshan Lu, it’s like you are in France! There are even some euro looking mini towns to walk around like the belowed pictured Thames town out in Songjiang.

10. Terraces Everywhere

Most shanghai restaurants have sprawling terraces which give a different perspective on the more traditional city views. Bund view? How about Peninsula, Flair, Lost Heaven or Bar Rouge? How about a city view like Kartel or Mayita? Sunsets and evening cocktails with your main squeeze makes the moment even sweeter.  

11. Skyline 

The skyline is always different depending where you stand along the Huangpu. Binjiang avenue has a beautiful spot to see the art-deco buildings of the Bund in Puxi. But sometimes, it is how different things look when we are on opposite vertical planes. 

12. Boat Rides

What is more romantic than going from Pudong to Puxi on a Ferry. With your love, be at two places at once in the middle of the river between the two coasts

There’s a ton of art around here, from 100 or so galleries in the M50 art district to bund, the power station of art, yadda yadda. There’s something uniquely romantic about the experience of seeing art together, it’s like an aphrodisiac for the eyes.

Shanghai’s magnificent city scenery carries a different romantic atmosphere each season. From the golden hues in the fall to the pink cherry blossoms in the spring, the city provide an amorous backdrop for all occasions.

Explore the many nooks and crannies of the flower market. From blossoms to birds or pets, it is a place that you can sneak a kiss and see  another side of the city together.

One of the staples in any romantic relationship is the infamous ‘movie night’. It just so happens that Shanghai is awash in cheap DVDs, and also themed private cinema rooms, so you can add a bit of ambience to your regular movie night.

19. Sultry Jazz Clubs

Set the mood right in one of the sultry jazz clubs in town. Whether it is listening to Dixieland jazz from the Peace Hotel’s Old Jazz Band performance or visiting one of the newer establishments, you can hold each other tight on the dancefloor and sneak a kiss.
