Shanghai F&B 's New Openings

It looks like Shanghai F&B has made it through the CNY dead zone and come out the other end red hot. Cafes, speakeasys, French restaurants and even a bar with magic, here’s our round-up of the latest new spots you should know about. 

SOBER COMPANY

The team behind Shanghai’s smash success Speaklow have done it again. An enormous F&B labyrinth that’s part café, part restaurant and part speakeasy, Sober Company is a name you’ll probably be hearing often from now on.

HEALER

Healer almost got lost in the craft cocktail shuffle this month, but we are more intrigued by them than many of the others. Their ingredients have an emphasis on healthy, ‘healing’ ingredients. They also have a few baijiu cocktails, which is quite difficult to pull off. 

BRUT CAKE CAFE

Brut Cake Café is a concept café that has tons of quirky custom furniture to go along with coffees, desserts, and our personal favorite: fried chicken and waffles. Reasonable prices and comforting venue to enjoy as regularly as you can.

CANDOR

Cocktail heaven, and circus burlesque bar Candor has finally reopened its new space after being shut down last summer. It’s now perched atop the third floor of the historic Lyceum theatre and has all of the charm and class to match.

HOMESLICE

Hallelujiah!! Someone in Shanghai has finally cracked the pizza code and made a perfect place with perfect pizza. Corner shop vibes, a few cocktails and what we’re claiming is the best pizza in the city here, at RMB 25 per slice it’s a steal.

ZOZZO

They say when it rains, it pours, and so is true apparently of Pizza in Shanghai. Just when pizza lovers thought things here were hopeless, a whole gaggle of new spots come out of nowhere. Zozzo is one of those spots, with a more quality ingredient approach to our favorite food. 

BOYA

Boya has been one of the best restaurants in Tel Aviv for the past 14 years and lucky us the Chef moved to Shanghai. Ideally situated near Jingan, Boya has excellent Israel cuisine, with a strong emphasis on fresh raw ingredients. Strongly recommend their Lamb Kebab at RMB98, Mixed seafood RMB168 and their unforgettable banana tarte tatin for RMB58.

ALAN'S BISTRO

Alan’s bistro is an elegant French restaurant  along the Bund, with great French cuisine, cozy décor and an eye-popping open kitchen that you won’t be able to look away from.

T8

It’s hard to separate the tourist traps from the good spots in Xintiandi, but T8 is definitely the latter. Quiet, comfortable and fancy, this place had incredible contemporary European, and Asian-flavored cuisine, as well as a gorgeous open kitchen to watch the all the action. 

BLACKSTONE MAGIC BAR

Do bars and magic shows mix? From what we’ve seen so far the answer is a definitive ‘yes.’ Blackstone magic bar offers instagrammable molecular cocktails and a whole bunch of nightly magic acts, down in the Found 158 jungle. 

THE CHOP CHOP CLUB

French chef Paul Pairet’s newest endeavor is upon us. The man behind such wild successes as Ultraviolet and Mr & Mrs Bund takes over 60 seats in Unico every night to serve mind-blowing dishes that are hearty, meaty, and completely unique. 

CAXTON

You love rugby? So do we! And this why you should head to Caxton to enjoy a match with a fresh pint, surrounded by a welcoming crowd and enjoying some pleasant bar snacks. From the same group that brought us Zapata, Caxton wants you to feel right at home when you visit, mission accomplished!

FARINE LAB

All you really need to know is that the Lab comes from Farine’s group. The name is a shortcut way to say laboratory and it is exactly the concept of this venue. The Lab is dedicated to making some of the best, most delicate and original pastries. 

Aside from the regularly updated pastries menu (which will be changed every few weeks) they also offer some incredible sandwiches. Several bread bases to choose from including tartine, croissant, and sour dough, then pair with a tasty filling: cheese, tuna, pesto. All served with a house salad and potato chips, vegan options available. Pastries and sanwiches are all around RMB40.

EL SANTO

This new spot just opened up, guess where... yep, Found 158! It's a taco/tequilla/margarita and mezcal paradise we will certainly be frequenting. Happy hour daily from 4am to 7pm.

PERA

Address: 158 Julu Lu, Datong Mill, 1/F

Price: Around RMB250 per person 

Found 158 now has Pera as well, the only  Mediterranean cuisine available there, and for good reason. Pera is coming from the same team asPasha. They've designed the venue and menu based on the cuisine of the Aegean region, along the Turkish seaside. Their cuisine is mainly based on seafood specialties and vegetables. You can still get all the classic Turkish foods like the Hummus, (RMB40)   Doner Kebab (RMB40) or the Friend Calamari ( RMB68). A must try!

ARKHAM

After a swirl of rumors and questions surrounding Arkham’s old location, the cat is out of the bag: they’re leaving the original spot behind. Great news though, they’ve decided on a new location in Found 158, the new hot-spot apparently, with an opening loosely planned for late March or early April.
