Bar Review: Healer Bar
Feeling a little guilty about drinking cocktails all week? Head to Healer, your TCM doctor will approve these ones!
HEALER
This elegant little spot hides a big secret: it’s not a cocktail lounge, but a medical venue. Well kind of... Surprised? Let us tell you more. At Healer, they serve you hand-crafted cocktails that are meant to be as medicinal as they are intoxicating.
Traditional Chinese medicine is well known for using different ingredients to heal a wide variety of ailments. Baijiu has been a part of that for a long time, and Healer starts with this ingredient in its healing cocktails. Of course we’re not talking about the RMB20 bottles from Family Mart, but a much more traditional kind, mainly imported from Shanxi province.
For thousands of years the Chinese have been drinking baijiu in order to get heal themselves. They’re certainly not alone in that as the French have always drank wine to stay healthy, and the Irish drink Scotch because they love it (which is another sort of ‘healing’ perhaps).
Witch Craft RMB80
Three cocktails contain baijiu for now. More are coming but it takes time to find the ideal balance (and after trying tons of baijiu we believe it). The first one is the white craft with rose fen chiew, lemon juice, egg white, and caste sugar at RMB80. Surprisingly... it’s really good! The color may looks odd but is natural. The rose baijiu is exquisite, and the lemon juice elegantly matches the intense flavors of it. RMB80 for this exquisite and very unique drink.
The Hossu drink is made with rye and chu ching chiew (two kinds of baijiu) demara syrup and chocolate bitters. Masculine drink, they mix whisky and baijiu. RMB 80
Out of these cocktails, Healer also offers a large selection of whiskey. They are classified by their origin, age, taste… don’t hesitate to ask the owner for more details.
The venue is managed by a Chinese lady who has been in the mixologist industry for more than ten years and used to be part of The Nest. Head to Healer in order to try cocktails you’ve never heard about before. Quiet atmosphere with immaculate decoration, it needs to be seen to be truly understood. It’s right near Jiaotong University, and while you might think it filled with date night couples we noticed a ton of the businessmen crowd happily healing themselves after long days of work.
