A Brand New Luxury Hotel Opens in Xuhui

2017-03-12 ShanghaiWOWeng

A little birdy told us that March has been cited as Shanghai’s “hotel new year”. Kicking things off is Capella Hotel.

CAPELLA

Address: 480 Jianguo Xi Lu, near Yueyang Lu, Xuhui district

This stunning building was actually built way back in the 80s by the French real estate company Foncière et Immobilière de Chine. It’s lived through all the city’s major changes, and finally in 2008 it embarked on its own journey of transformation.

Appearance-wise, Capella has kept much of its original Chinese architecture, but some French accents have been added to encapsulate the modern spirit of Shanghai as it is today. It is now Shanghai’s first ever villa-style hotel. It boasts a whopping 55 bedrooms and 40 luxury suites. Not bad in just 8 years of construction!

On the ground floor is the living room, or in Old Shanghai this would have been the ‘guest room’. It’s super Chinese looking with tea readily prepared for your arrival, as well as pretty oriental wall hangings adorning the surroundings.

The bedroom is located on the second floor. The colour scheme of the bedrooms is really simple and relaxing, perfect for your mini getaway.

As for food, Capella boasts a cool new concept restaurant called Comptoir Pierre Gagnaire. The style and decor has been kept in line with the rest of the hotel.

You’re in safe hands here because the head chef, Pierre Gagnaire, owns a whopping 12 restaurants all over the world and earned himself 13 Michelin stars! Just like all his other restaurants, he wants to keep the atmosphere relaxed and calm so that the diners can enjoy their food stress-free.

Aside from the rooms and the restaurant, there’s also an Auriga spa for you to look forward to!

Before coming to China, not many people knew about Capella, despite being the absolute top end of luxury. Singapore’s national treasures, Sun Yanzi and Yao Chen, actually got married here!

CAPELLA'S SECRETS

Behind the Hero

Capella was first opened back in 2002, but sadly closed down. The founder, Horst Schulze, went on to serve as president of the Ritz-Carlton Group for a short period, before famously telling his family, “I’m going to do it one more time.” Thus, he created the Capella Hotel Group.

Please note, the Capella Hotel Group is made up of four different brands: Capella Hotels & Resorts (based in Nanjing), Solís (hotels, resorts and residences as one, also based in Nanjing), independent hotels (dedicated to management and service), and Auriga spa.

Redefining Ultra-Luxury

What people considered to be ultra-luxury 30 years ago is definitely not what we would consider ultra-luxury now. Schulze said that the standard ‘luxury’ hotel is the Ritz-Carlton, whereas Capella is upping the game with ‘ultra-luxury’! This isn’t just the nonsense rambling of the owner; countless guests have described Capella in Singapore as one of the best hotels in the world.

Location

There’s a Capella in every corner of the world (Shanghai, Singapore, Dusseldorf in Germany, Ixtapa in Mexico)!

Old Buildings

Almost every Capella building has a long and fascinating history behind it. The one in Singapore was built in the 1880s, whilst Germany’s Capella wins with over 210 years of history!

Colonial Design

Every country’s been deeply influenced by their former colonisation. As a result, every single Capella hotel has elements of its rich local history in its decor and architecture. Of course, with the exception of Germany’s Capella...

Privacy

Capella is a huge advocate for ‘exclusivity’ and ‘privacy’, to ensure that guests feel as if they’ve slipped unnoticed into the countryside. The hotel is surrounded by trees and vegetation, so you never have to worry about any peeping Toms when you go for a dip in the pool!

Important Element

The Capella Library is the hallmark of every hotel, and is a great place to enjoy the comfort and tranquility of the hotel. The Auriga spa is also unmissable.

Best Staff in the World

One of the many reasons why Schultze is so proud of his creation is the dedication and commitment of his staff to providing the best possible customer service in the world. Just like in the Ritz-Carlton Group, Schultze personally trained all the staff himself. Plus, every room comes with a 24/7 personal assistant provided!

Are You That 5%?

Every Capella hotel is incredibly expensive (RMB 3000 per night in Singapore), so allegedly the only people who stay here are in the top 5% of the world’s elite.

CAPELLA HOTELS AROUND THE WORLD

Singapore

The hotel’s dazzling architecture was originally used by the British government for their senior conference venue. It was later renovated by the award-winning British architect firm Foster + Partners.

The monochrome creates a sense of cleanliness, while the plants bring a hint of warmth. Plus if you’re lucky, you might even see one of the rare local birds flying past!

Ixtapa, Mexico

This one is made up of 59 villas all facing the sea. The location is stunning, and therefore the perfect spot to lounge in the infinity pool or enjoy a meal on the cliffside restaurant.

Marigot Bay, St. Lucia

This gorgeous resorts manages to be romantic, fun and adventurous all at once. It’s made up of dozens of wooden villas, not to mention the stunning natural environment surrounding it. As with all their hotels, it incorporates local flavours into its decor.

Dusseldorf, Germany

With a history of over 210 years, this hotel really has seen it all! Unlike the other Capella hotels, this one looks much more business-like. That’s not to say it isn’t still beautiful, and public figures and political leaders have often stayed here.

More Capella hotels will be opening soon in Southeast Asia!

EXPANSION

Ubud, Indonesia

Hidden inside a local forest, yet another Capella will be opening in 2017. Inspired by the 19th-century colonists, the hotel will be built in the style of their tents. The architect is a world-class landscape designer called Bill Bensley, who also designed Hangzhou Four Seasons and The Siam in Bangkok.

Bangkok, Thailand (2018)

Capella will soon be the proud neighbour of Four Seasons, situated right on the riverside. The hotel will have 100 rooms with a view, as well as a number of private, more secluded villas. But what we’re most excited for is the zen garden and the outdoor terrace!
