Heat is Our New Favorite Rotisserie Chicken Spot

2017-03-16 ShanghaiWOWeng

Rotisserie Chicken isn’t easy to perfect. You need the right equipment, staff who know their craft, and of course: amazing chicken. Recently opened Heat on Maoming Bei Lu has all three, as well as a bunch of other stuff that makes them one of our new favorite spots.

THE CHICKEN

The venue is a cool mix of retro French and contemporary minimalism, but let’s focus on what really matters: those amazing birds.

Their chickens are a French-Taiwan mix, Red Label, each weighing between 1.6 - 1.7 kg.

The chef here has created a menu that is steeped in home-cooked goodness, the dishes all taste like something from your grandma's kitchen. Sure there are probably a lot of calories flying around here, but it’s so good who cares, plus you’re certainly getting your money’s worth!

The chicken is secretly prepared for hours before being roasted for 50 minutes.  The skin on these birds is truly amazing, slightly crispy, slightly sweet and for sure ambrosial. Enjoy juiciness, tender flavors and natural salt of the meat.

SIDES & SAUCES

There are seven options when it comes to the sides, all made with love and full flavor for just RMB20 each. They’ve got three potato-based sides, mashed, fried or baked:

Mash potatoes – Pomme noisette Fries – Gratin Dauphinois

And then there are four vegetable-based sides, classic French home-style:

Ratatouille – Roasted Pumpkin - Garlic Mushroom - Brussels Sprouts

At Heat they have only one kind of classic chicken, however, five sauces are available to liven things up: Honey Mustard, Thai Chili, Garlic Aioli, ChimiChurri and Chicken Gravy.

COMBOS

¼ chicken RMB52, +1 side + 1 sauce RMB65

½ chicken RMB98, +2 sides + 2 sides RMB125

Whole chicken RMB188, +4 sides + 4 Sauces RMB245

SALADS, SANDWICHS & MAINS

There are some other options here as well, big salads that range in price from RMB58-88. There’s Caesar, Roasted Pumpkin & Chicken, Duck Breast, and Fisherman. Each bowl is fresh, tasty and simple.

French people and their eternal love: Bread! Well we can understand this addiction, especially when it is filled with... whatever actually. Ciabatta or pain de champagne base for these three bready delights: one adapted from the nicoise salad, a reinvented croque madame or a steak tartine.  RMB68-98

Heat has much more than chicken, their classic French mains are great and include beef and fish. Four main courses from RMB68-178. Stuffed veggies & pilaf rice, chicken vallee d’Auge, Grenobloise Halibut, Red Wine Stewed Beef cheeks. It is very unlikely you will leave this place hungry.

DESSERT

When it comes to the dessert, girls always have a second stomach. The sweets here are a magnificent way to end an evening, even though you may have to roll your way home afterwards instead of walking.

Best of the best here is the French Toast. We are a bit speechless trying to explain the divine sensation of this milky/surgery/bready/buttery piece of paradise. It might be one of the best inexpensive desserts in Shanghai at RMB30.

The Bugnes, sweet treat coated with icing sugar, orange flower flavor, waiting to be soaked in chocolate. Guilty pleasure alert is on full blast with this one at RMB35.

Classic Lava Cake with a homemade recipe that includes dark Belgium chocolate. RMB40 for this rich dish.

Last but not least, the Cheesecake mousse. Heat chose to do a classic among classics to here, paired with oreo cookie, berry jam and fresh berries.  RMB40.

THE DRINKS

Did we mention Heat has a lounge bar?

Their Fresh Juices are divine. Comprised of only fresh-squeezed fruits, for RMB38 they are the best we’ve tried in town.

Oh and there are also cocktails, all at RMB78, all gorgeous and deceptively strong.

Their happy hour is great. From 5-7pm, selected wine at RMB30 per glass (down from RMB40), their signature cocktails as well (down to RMB 40) and the peoples’ choice:  Asashi beer for RMB15. For this area those prices are a steal.

Who you should go with:  Your best friend, your colleague or anyone you feel great with

What you should drink: A Fruit juice! Or two, or three…

What you should eat: A Chicken of course, sacrebleu! And don’t forget the French toast when you’re finished!
