Shanghai's Organic Restaurants: Myth or Reality?

Organic vegetables in China - are they a myth or reality?  Well, it certainly is possible to cultivate them here.  We’ve decided to focus on restaurants that provides traceability of their food and support sustainable growing processes. Some by visiting their suppliers in person, others by growing their own produce. Give some love to the Earth-lovers!


MAHOTA kitchen & Farm

Growing vegetables since 2010



“Our Farm, Our Food” has been the slogan of Mahota group since 2010. To back it up, they have their own “Mahota Farm” in ChongMing island, making their own compost and growing vegetables free from pesticides or chemical fertilizers.


What do they promise?


Through growing their own organic produce and serving it completely fresh, they give a goodness guarantee! As they seek to adopt sustainable practices in their farm, they promise to create a better environment - for eating and beyond.


About the farm:



Mahota Farm, located on Chongming Island, has a total land area of 43 hectares devoted to sustainable farming. By pursuing waste-to-resource agriculture, they removed the use of harmful chemical additives while also allowing their animals to run freely. A process geared towards growing safer and tastier food!



No pesticides



As Mahota farm create their own compost, they never use chemical fertilizers! For pesticides, they use bio-control to reduce damage.

Mahota farm feed their pigs with their own produce, and let them run freely!



About the quality control:


They do their best to ensure a closed loop ecosystem with traceability for best use of resources and quality control. They aim to establish a sustainable agro-eco system to fulfill the vision of a harmonic farm that unifies humanity, soil and crops. For pest control, natural enemas are released and environmentally friendly measures are used to reduce the negative impact on the environment.



TRIBE

Visiting, in person, each supplier



Tribe is a new Shanghai restaurant which offers many vegetarian, vegan, paleo and gluten-free options throughout their entire menu. Their mantra of “organic creativity” starts with sourcing all their ingredients from organic suppliers. Most importantly, TRIBE is a lifestyle brand that firmly believes in promoting the concept of holistic health for everybody. More than just a restaurant, it’s a TRIBE.


Organic Suppliers:



Apart from their wine and alcoholic beverages which are imported, everything else is locally sourced. Ingredients come locally and from the same city and they make a point to support small farms that they trust. For each farm they work with, the GM and co-owner come to quality-check it in person.

WUJIE

Precious Rice and oil


High quality ingredients are integral to their gastronomic creations. In order to achieve authentic, natural flavors, they team up with the laws of nature to find the most suitable top-quality, seasonal ingredients.


What do they promise?


WUJIE has contract farms that follow natural cultivation methods to create a sustainable environment for all part of the ecosystem. They try their best to ensure that pesticides, chemical fertilizers and herbicides are not used in the growing process of the vegetables. Plus 100% of their rice and cooking oil are organic.



About their rice and oil:


All of their rice is gathered from the “Gold Black Soil” region in northeastern China, where the lands and water that have been passed down from our ancestors remain completely uncontaminated. This precious rice is harvested only once a year and is unrivaled in terms of taste and fragrance.


The cooking oil they use - Organic Camellia Seed oil - from the brand Run Xin, is harvested from the town of Yi Chun in Jiang Xi province. This oil is less ‘smoky’ than others, preserving the nutrition of the ingredients and a smoke-free environment for the culinary team who are in the kitchen all day.

 

WUJIE sells the rice and oil that they use at the restaurant through their retail brand WUJIE Lifestyle 大蔬生活.



HUNTER GATHERER

Self-owned farms promoters

Hunter Gatherer has built a network of self-owned organic farms in China to supply their kitchens with chemical-free seasonal produce, from colorful carrots to crunchy kale. Their farms are truly at the heart of Hunter Gatherer’s seed-to-table identity.

 


What do they promise?


Hunter Gatherer was created to bring trustworthy and ethically grown food to China, with a strong emphasis on transparency in sourcing. They guarantee that all produce from their farms is grown naturally without any synthetic chemicals or toxic shortcuts. They also promise to never use any artificial additives, coloring, flavoring, preservatives, sweeteners, or high fructose corn syrup in anything they serve you. What’s not to love!


About the farm:


Both farms have been certified organic. Organic certification is a difficult process and only granted after at least three years of operation and rigorous testing to ensure the soil and water used are completely free of synthetic chemicals.



Yantai Farm:


Located in a coastal region of the Shandong province, our 1,000-mu (165 acre) Yantai farm grows 90 different varieties of organic produce, from leafy greens to root vegetables.



Chongming farm:

 

With 80 greenhouses in operation and a 1,000-mu (165 acre) farm, the Chongming location primarily grows leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, and a variety of lettuce types.



They don’t raise livestock for meat, but they do have families of ducks and geese that provide fresh eggs, as well as loyal farm dogs that love to keep farmers company!

 

About the quality control:



Their all-natural farming techniques aim to improve the land and lives of the people who grow, prepare, and enjoy the food. Sustainable practices they use include natural pest control, pollination with Dutch bees, and microbial compost.

 

 

GREEN & SAFE

QIMING ORGANIC

From Farm to Table

What do they promise?

All ingredients pass through a regular inspection by SGS:

no hormones, no additives, no GMO, no animal drug residues and no clenbuterol (lean mean powder)

About the farm:


Green&Safe has a suitable 8 hectares farmland in Kunshan, Shanghai, in 2001. It has four organic certificates - OFDC, JONA,OCIA and ECOCERT. The concept of “From Farm to Table” is a constant goal; by picking and delivering the freshest ingredients from the farm daily, the brand strives to provide customers with foods that are the freshest in quality and the most delectable in taste.

Green&Safe employs a unique team of quality control experts to ensure the food ingredients stay in their most pristine state without any artificial processing.

They check about hormones and antibiotics, in a sustainable way for the environment.
