FREE DRINKS This Wednesday from 8-10pm at New Bar Ruin

Michael Ohlsson, the guy behind Dada nightclub, has tipped us off about a new bar he’s opening called Ruin (入音), and from what we’ve seen it looks set to be a unique space for Shanghai.

The name of the bar, Ruin, is an intentional bad translation and bi-lingual pun. Originally planned as a speakeasy cocktail bar, when the space was being demolished they thought it looked good so decided to leave it as it was, Michael tells us. “We thought - oh, look at that, just leave it like that - it looks like a ruin, that's nice,” he said.

Located just behind Dada on Xingfu Lu, Ruin is basically a chill out style space, lit up nicely, with no music and raw rustic walls, with part bare brick and part broken concrete. They plan to change the furniture regularly and have exhibits and art from local artists. There is a mezzanine floor, which is quite unusual for Shanghai, and the ceiling fans keep the place nice and cool during these hot evenings. The space is a perfect yin yang compliment to the loudness and chaos of Dada when it’s heaving. Think of Ruin as a place to chill and have a conversation.

The bar has it’s own entrance, you have to walk past the main entrance to Dada to get there, but it’s also accessible (only sometimes we’re told) from the back of club, from an inconspicuous door near the DJ booth.

The drinks menu will be different from Dada, and maybe a little more exclusive. Summer spritz (RMB50) will be the order of the day, also wine by the glass (RMB45) and a smart selection of craft beers (RMB40). We’re told there will be a few mixed drinks, but no cocktails and nothing too fancy. There will be four types of spritz available from Aperol and Campari to Cocchi Americano aperitif.

Usual opening hours will be from 9pm to 1am every night, but for the grand opening on Wednesday the doors will open at 8pm and there will be free drinks until 10pm. This event is open to the public so bring your friends along to check out Shanghai’s newest spot and see for yourself what it’s all about.
