Zeitgeist Brings Real-Ass German Food to Jing'an

2017-05-16 ShanghaiWOWeng

There’s a new option for meat and beer lovers in Jing’an, with spot-on German cuisine, strong beers and friendly staff, Zeitgeist might just be our new favorite spot. But what exactly is it?

Zeitgeist [zeit·geist \ˈtsīt-ˌgīst, ˈzīt-\]:  the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era

 [THE CONCEPT]

Zeitgeist is a Bavarian style diner. Wait, Bavaria?

Have you tried food from Bavaria before? If not, don’t worry, it’s great and it’s now in Shanghai. Just for a quick reference of where/what that is:

Where is Bavaria?

Bavaria is one of Germany’s 16 Federal states, located in the southern part of the country. The capital is Munich. The food is delicious. There, you’ve got it. Bavaria also happens to be the richest part of Germany in terms of culture, celebrating all the German clichés like Oktoberfest, funky folk clothes (aka Tracht), pretzels, etc.

German vocabulary N1: Tracht,traditional garments

The people and food there are particularly down to earth. Nothing fancy, just good ingredients, quality, and strong tastes. Their cuisine is based on meat (no kidding), mushroom, cheese, sausage, bread… it’s wild, compact, tough, raw… everything that makes a man happy.

What to expect?

Zeitgeist is a cozy dining venue to head to if you want something hearty, simple, and with a high-level of stomach satisfaction.

This is how you feel dinning at Zeitgeist

[THE FOOD]

Bavarian Sausage salad with pretzel RMB68

Chopped meatloaf strips mix with emmental, onions, pickle juice, white wine vinegar, garlic… an undisputed beergarden favorite. By the way Zeitgeist has a terrace. It's fresh and fulfilling without being too heavy, and the marinated tart tastes perfect with a beer.

Served chilled, it is a great option for a Summer lunch.

Cheese gratin “Spatzle” with roasted onion and salad greens RMB68

German vocabulary N2: Spatzle are German pasta… what makes them different? They add egg in the dough and fry it.

Admit it, nothing is more comforting than pasta with cheese AND cream AND onions. The consistency fulfills you within minutes with soft, generously creamy glutinous dough. It goes down in your stomach without trouble, although you may need a nap afterwards.

Schweinsbraten RMB108:

Roasted pork with dark beer gravy, red cabbage or sauerkraut and bread dumpling

German vocabulary N3: Schweinsbraten. Love to eat it, hate to pronounce it.

Amazing dish in typical Bavarian style. Think of it as their version of Fish & chips or a Raclette. It is hearty, robust and savory. Slices of great quality roasted pork, consistent bread, savory cabbage. Eat your feast and pay your bill.

Sausage platter RMB168:

Served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes

Sausage pieces: Spicy cheese krainer, Debreziner, Thuringia, Nuremberg sausage and bock sausage

German vocabulary N4: Sauerkrautis finely cut preserved cabbage

Oh boy we will remember this dish for a long time. It was the highlight of the night. It is a sausage party and it is awesome. Several kinds of delectable German sausages in a row served with cabbage and potatoes. Meat, cabbage, potatoes- perfect combo you’d be silly to miss out on. Zeitgeist’s sausages are made with imported ingredients, fresh meat and good quality skin. RMB 168 only, great deal, seriously.

Jägerschnitzel RMB 98

with creamy mushroom sauce and spätzle

German vocabulary N5: Jägerschnitzel pork meat in paprika with mushroom cream sauce and spätzle and then pan fried.

Here comes a hunter's dish. If you consider the ingredients, it is actually a healthy combination: meat, vegetables, dairies… it brings you all you need in one shot. We say “hunter” style dish because it's more like meat, meat, meat, cream, mushrooms, pasta... Feed the beast that’s all you should care about.

Homemade apple strudel with vanilla sauce RMB 48

You can be a meat enthusiast but also have a heart for sweet little desserts… A pastry stuffed with a mix of sugar, raisins and apples. Served with vanilla sauce. Easy!

[THE DRINKS]

One word: Beer

Germany and beer: two words forever stitched together in history. Zeitgeist’s beers are as great as you’d expect from an authentic German spot, and affordable.

BUT they are not prohibitively pricey like so many venues around the city. Ok at Zeitgeist count RMB 55 for…. a bottle of delicious imported Franziskaner Wheat beer, ok sounds like a better deal. Their main house beer is from Germany (of course); it’s a light blond beer (Lager) and it is RMB35 per glass (0.5L). Finally a venue with affordable beers!

They also serves Gin& Tonics (which are very popular in Germany) if you want to avoid the classic beer belly. Price range is between RMB50-95. The price difference comes from the quality of the gin.

Same for the Spritz. Price range RMB45-60. Well Spritz are trendy now, it pleases the ladies.

With its bar and terrace, Zeitgeist should not be considered only as a dinning venue. It’s also a perfect spot for buddies gathering to enjoy the weather and slam a bunch of beers.

Who you should go with: Your beer buddy, your meat lover buddy, your German buddy, your big boys

What you should drink: A beer (obviously)

What you should eat: The sausage party feast!
