Brunch Review: Cobra Lily

2017-05-19 ShanghaiWOWeng

Brunch time has become a necessity in Shanghai, and over at one of Shanghai’s poshiest areas of Xintiandi, Cobra Lily truly sets itself apart from other competitors in this area with a contemporary Pan-Asian concept menu.

The food

Cobra Lily brings a lot of South East Asian flair into the menu, so we were enthusiastic to see most of the brunch selection carries a variety of Asia-inspired cuisine.

Pokémon Go RMB 128

If you are searching for something refreshing and fulfilling at the same time, then look no further. Though the sushi rice is a little too warm compared to other pokes around town, its thankfully not scorching hot to consume. The yellow fin tuna sashimi blends in smoothly with the avocado and wakame seaweed while the cucumber and cashew garnish give an edgy crunch needed for a wholesome experience.

Soi Cowboy Thai Flank Steak Salad RMB98

Clean eating with an exotic flair is what we experienced with this dish. While we are in love with the fusion concept, the construction of the ingredients seemed a little lost. Our savory journey was obstructed by the dry and tough pieces of steak, thanks to the aromatic lemongrass kaffir lime dressing, the flavors remained appetizing and we were able to continue munching. Although the vegetables used are befitting of a south-east Asian elements, the setting was a little misplaced, reminding us of a beautiful Thai garden that hasn’t been tended to.  If you want something that says, “I’m healthy but I like to taste naughty,” the Soi Cowboy salad is definitely your perfect match.

 Lily’s Brunch Plate RMB78

Lily’s Brunch Plate is a hassle-free approach that really pleases the stomach, but it lacks the rich and complex flavors that defines Cobra Lily. The rich buttery texture of scrambled eggs is perfectly combined with the brioche toast, while the silky smooth avocado balances the savory flavors of crispy bacon. We haven’t figured out who Lily is, but she definitely sounds like the perfect girlfriend or sorority sister to have when you wake up from a hangover.

We also ordered the Siamese Sunrise to have a good compare and contrast of tastes, but our order got lost in the hustle and bustle, and thanks to the show-stealing cocktails, we didn't mind waiting one bit.

La Vie En Vietnam RMB 68

A sweet bliss in Vietnam should be the rightful name for this dessert because it not only expresses the essence of French and Vietnamese style; it is also the right fusion for any occasion. The cream cheese filling provides a sense of guilty pleasure in the crepe while the acidity of tropical mango and passion fruit neutralizes your taste buds and guides you to a serene summer sensation.

Signature Strawberry Belgian Waffle RMB78

A childhood classic, who can say no to Belgian waffles? Especially when they're accompanied with fresh berries, whipped cream and generously drizzled with homemade blackberry sauce. The satisfying crisp of the waffles along with the flavorsome freshness of the fruits tells you that everything is made from scratch, and a sweet staple like this dish is not to be taken lightly.

The drinks

We decided to opt for a traditional hangover cure and a summer beverage for the ages. When it comes to the magical hands of Cobra Lily’s bar manager Ruslan Kaptsan, you know you're in for a real treat.

Bloody Ma’ry (80 RMB)

Served in a good old-fashioned tin can, this bloody Mary is unlike any other we’ve tried. Besides the staples of tomato juice, vodka and chili pepper, it is infused with uncommon ingredients such as spiced beef jerky, lemongrass and Sichuan peppercorns. You can literally taste a global village in this can with the exciting variation of flavors making your taste buds go hot, sweet, even numb.

Bergamot Lemonade/ Rose Lemonade (45 RMB)

An absolute fave for summer, the lemonades constructed here are not solely refreshing with ordinary staples like lemon juice and water, the interesting twist of using Bergamot Puree, or Rose and Raspberry have truly given this drink a new identity, and a very welcomed one at that.

Tom Khallins (75 RMB)

Sweet, creamy and spicy are the flavors to expect in a traditional soup dish like this. But never have we thought that it could be made into an icy cocktail and remain rooted in its traditional form. It’s rare to come across a cocktail that is rich and nourishing, while remaining mild on the palette. Served in a Thai soup bowl, every sip gets you lost in Thailand and found in Shanghai.

While the promise of Pan-Asian magic didn’t quite happen for us on this trip, the drinks and delightful ambiance pretty much made up for it. With the desserts and drinks saving the day, it remains a sweet finale and we can definitely say it was a happy ending.
