The Absolute Best Dishes We Ate this Month

2017-05-22 ShanghaiWOWeng

It is that time of the monthagain, the time for us to show you the tried and tested creations bound to enthrall your taste buds. The ones who made it on our list are Funkadeli, L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, Pure & Whole, Zeitgeist and Diner.

FUNKADELI

The mecca for a perfect weekend brunch, Funkadeli is good vibes from top to bottom. You can always count on a chic crowd smiling, kids laughing and dogs wagging their tails, you know there’s definitely good fengshui here.

The one dish that really caught our attention is the Roasted Argentine Prawns with Avocado Relish.

Tuna Tartare with Avocado, Basalmic, Pine Nuts (RMB 75)

It’s quite rare to spot a seafood option in a brunch menu, and rather risky to be honest. But a bite of the raw tuna really convinced us that they take their ingredients seriously here, no fishy smell or rough patches whatsoever. The marriage of avocado and pine nuts as relish is perfect as the sweetness and buttery flavors accentuate the succulence of the tuna. What makes us want to come back to this place again- the incredibly reasonable prices. At RMB 88 for any main and side, and RMB 148 for any two mains and a side, it’s a steal if you ask us. Any cheaper you’d have to farm the ingredients yourself.

ZEITGEIST

We know, German craft beers and microbreweries are getting a little cliché around here lately. But what we tasted at Zeitgeist is something different, it’s solid, no-nonsense Bavarian bites that’ll make you want to come back again and again.

Bavarian Sausage Salad with Pretzel (RMB 68)

Forget super-foods and power-fruits, WE’RE OVER IT. We’re in need of a humble man’s man salad cause when it comes to pure nourishment, it all boils down to simple ingredients. Served cold in a glass jar on a plank of wood, this is a perfect fresh raw vibe to start a mid-summer meal. The stripes of Bavarian sausage are filled with flavors of white wine vinegar and garlic, strong aroma assaults and a beautiful crunch of pickles. It also matches very well with the savory pretzel and allows both flavors to play a gastronomical melody in your mouth.

Schweinsbraten (RMB 108)

A name that non-Germans can never pronounce, but who cares about speaking it where you can just eat this Bavarian beauty. The pork is roasted to perfection and with a dip of beer gravy, it becomes an absolute divine being. What makes the entire dish pop is the burgundy red cabbage which is so sweet and crunchy, eating it alone screams heaven in your gut. This is the kind of dish you’ll want to feed your boyfriend when he’s being a good boy, or a brother if you owe him a huge favor.

L'ATELIER DE JOËL ROBUCHON

Let’s face it, we all want to be seen here with our best outfit of the day, not to mention the finer things in life are always sweet and sinful. Yes we are talking about something French and something uptown, Robuchon at Bund 18 greeted us with some fine-ass pastries and cakes and we are delighted to break it down for you.

Salted caramel tart (RMB 58)

Firstly, anything chocolate is a must, but when it comes to a caramel tart filled with hazelnut and milk chocolate mousse, the fat kid inside me is screaming already. The first bite of this caramel tart, you immediately feel your taste-buds engulfed by the strong cacao, leaving a faint savory saltiness in the aftertaste. The sugar dough is not overly sweet and lends itself to the chocolate mousse by offering the needed crunch and allowing the chocolate flavors to melt delectably in your mouth without taking any credit from it. We don’t need to say more chocoholics, do your job and get going for this already.

Raspberry and Lychee Cake (RMB 65)

Not even the reddest rose could look as seductive as this cake. The impression you get from a bright red dessert like this to be awfully sweet and artificially fruity, but this cake definitely surprised us with a delectable sorbet-like punch. By incorporating dark chocolate as a garnish, the sweet bitterness of cacao glides smoothly into the aromatic rose cream brulee, which creates an interesting character along with the sourness of the lychee, while leaving enough space for the acidity to cleanse your palette.

PURE & WHOLE

People are always talking about a detox, but just when are they really going to start doing it? The truth is most of them will never stick to it because eating clean can be a little too boring sometimes. Well this vegetarian/vegan restaurant is committed to breaking the boring detox stereotypes and prove that clean eating can actually be delicious.

Popeye (RMB 62 for small, RMB 108 for large)

You guessed it, from the name itself it’s kind of obvious spinach is the star ingredient here. But once you start stirring and digging, you realized there’s a lot more to be discovered. Instead of using some starchy chunks of fake meat, what we are most surprised and impressed by is their use of coconut flesh as a substitute for bacon. In fact the tropical sweetness of the silky smooth coconut creates an appetizing catalyst to the cooked spinach and lentils which can be dull if eaten alone. By adding edamame and wakame seaweed to the bowl, they give it a satisfying crunch, highlighted by the perfect amount of miso dressing.

Pure & Whole Cheesecake (RMB 42)

We know what you’re thinking, how can a vegan cheesecake be called a cheesecake right? But what if we told you it’s going to taste better than the real deal minus the calories? We totally forgot about needing butter when the use of coconut oil gives it a smooth slippery texture with a stronger aroma. The blend of soy milk and maple syrup also provide a sweet creaminess you expect from cheese. Though we had hoped the cacao flavor in the chocolate layer would be more significant, the avocado serum within and the base of walnuts and dates gives you the perfect crisp without the guilt. For some reason, the vegan version of a cheesecake makes you feel more satisfied and less addicted, like you’re finally savoring real food here during dessert, the most sinful course in a meal.

DINER

Walking past this intersection around the edges of Wuyuan road, you’re immediately drawn by the good old songs and smells of sizzling meat. For a second you might think you are lost along some American highway waiting to fill up your car. This is an all-American diner we are talking about, albeit slightly upscale with ingredients like wagyu beef patties and foie gras. It’s has just the right amount of twist for a Shanghai breakfast spot.

French Toast Gold Standard ( RMB 98)

It may sound a little ridiculous asking someone to pay RMB 98 for French toast, but again this isn’t a regular dish, it’s the ‘gold star’ one. Drizzled in strawberry pepper syrup and generously relished with pistachio streusel, it adds a sweet crunch to every bite of the soft fluffy French toast. In fact the toast is actually melting in your mouth and somewhat resembles a creme brulee, fusing perfectly with the earthiness of the foie gras and brandy gravy. The only thing we hoped for is a little more foie gras if we are breaking our bank for French toast. Giving a small piece of foie gras to three big pieces of toast is kind of like asking your triplets to share a book and read.
