Your Guide to the Top 5 Day Drinking Spots in Jingan

2017-05-23 ShanghaiWOWeng

Ah, the summer is finally here, the possibilities seem endless, and your love for the world and the people in it are at its peak. For those lucky souls who get to enjoy the odd day off during the week, this guide to day drinking is for you.

With the help of self confessed day drinking expert Logan R. Brouse, head honcho over at Logan’s Punch, we have selected five perfect day drinking spots in Jingan district to help you maximize your daylight drinking hours.

Let’s be honest everything is more fun during the daylight hours between noon and 6pm. You walk about during the day with a buzz because you know your friends are at work, chained to their desk like the slaves to Capitalism they are.

You’re in the bar getting drunk, enjoying the fact that there’s no long queue to get another drink. At 5pm as the plebs leave their offices you’re content in the knowledge that your day has been very well spent. And when you’re finally done, it’s not 4am and impossible to get a cab home!

In the words of Little Big Town:

“Don't want to wait til the sun's sinking,

We could be feeling all right,

I know you know what I'm thinking,

Why don't we do a little day drinking.”

FAT COW

Address: 1F, 135 Yanping Road, near Wuding Road

Time: Open from 10am

Maybe considered more of a restaurant than a bar, Fat Cow has been included because it opens bright and early at 10am. This is perfect spot to start your day drinking. Grab some brunch around midday, before indulging in a whole afternoon of boozing. Happy hour starts at 4pm if you haven’t moved on by then.

Logan recommends the Pink Spiked Gin Lemonade, a perfect summer sweet & sour lift if you don’t fancy or had too many beers already.

FUNKADELINO

Address: 356 Xikang Road, near Xinzha Road

Time: Open from 11am

Another spot that opens early, but is probably best enjoyed around 3pm when the streets are quiet and you’re just hitting the point of getting nicely drunk. It’s a little street-side place and has a decent selection of Italian wines, so will make you look less lager lout and more classy wino. They sell paninis and such so you can grab a little snack to stop the weaker flaking, and let you push on through to the evening when the cocktails and chasers start getting involved.

Logan recommends the white wine or a spritz, because a little fizz on a sunny afternoon can make you look like a really classy day drinker.

ROOSTER

Address: 455 North Shanxi Bei Road, near West Beijing Road

Time: From 11am

If you like to day drink in a proper bar then this is the spot for you. There’s plenty of solid craft ales to sup on such as Jing-A, Kentucky IPA, Dead Guy Ale and Boulevard Pale Ale. There’s even cider available from Cider Republic. The front façade totally opens in summer, so you can sit outside while you have a smoke, and still watch the sport on TV. It’s next door to Sumerian coffee so you can even get a bagel and coffee beforehand and be waiting at the door when they open at 11am!

Logan recommends the Titos homemade vodka and fresh OJ with a Jameson chaser, because what better way to laugh at the workers looking for a quick lunch than merrily Irish drunk, right?

WONDERLAND

Address: 1311 Xinzha Road, near North Shaanxi Road

Tel: Opens from 4pm

If you’ve had a few drink already and fancy finally disappearing down the rabbit hole, then a stop by Wonderland will do the job. There are plenty of decent cocktails to get into, from the Mushroom Garden, which may or may not make you shrink (or possibly trip out…), to the wonderfully named Teagroni, a Negroni served in a teacup. Afternoons don’t get better, especially when you come round on a beach with a rabbit hopping about your feet. Seriously.

Logan recommends the Tito’s homemade vodka and fresh OJ, with a Fernet Branca chaser, because why not, it’s daytime right.

TAP HOUSE

Address: Zhong Plaza, 99 Taixing Road, near Wujiang Road

Time: Open from 4pm

This spot is good if you’re a beer day drinker. They have a great selection of imported beers from around the world, which you can enjoy on the patio of Zhong Plaza, a neat little area tucked away from the hustle and bustle of West Nanjing Road shopping street. Get started early and by 5pm you can be nicely inebriated to see the workers finishing their shifts.

Logan recommends the Scrimshaw beer on draft, a fresh tasting German Pilsner style beer, made from Munich and Klages malts, and the Hallertauer and Tettnang hops.

Come back next week to check out day drinking spots on the Bund, for the high-end day drinkers out there. And if you have some other suggestions for day drinking spots please share in the comment section!
