Live Gigs This Week

For the live music fans out there, this week has a variety of sounds on offer. From experimental psychedelic rock at Chair Club, to modern fusion jazz at JZ Club, through Chinese folk at Modern Sky Lab. There’s also a chance to catch two of Shanghai’s favorite punk bands, Round Eye and Dirty Fingers, face off at Inferno on Saturday night.

Under the influence of western music, J3 Trio have created music that combines tradition with modern elements. They have just released their debut album “Redman” whose genre is fusion, funk, rock and modern jazz.

Indie female singer-songwriter Zitan is based in Hangzhou. Her sound is ephemeral, her venting mood expressing her natural sensitiveness, the melodic flow and emotion leading the audience on a journey through darkness into light.

Three bands comes together showcasing three sides of rock music, from youthful ennui by Dream Can, through funk by Peace & Wave, and experimental psychedelic rock from Mirrors.


HUA ZHOU NATIONAL TOUR

Hua Zhou is currently on a tour of China, which started in March 2017, and will cover 70 cities. Her style is Chinese folk, incorporating Chinese ballads in an acoustic style.

As usual on a Friday night, three bands lineup to showcase the best of Shanghai’s underground indie scene. This week is Wheelhouse, Frozen Cops and Hogchoker.


DOUBLE DRAGON PRESENTS: FACE ME ON THE STAGE

Face Me On The Stage is no ordinary ‘Battle of the Bands’. Shanghai Punk stalwarts Dirty Fingers and Round Eye face off, separated only by one drum kick, each playing 10 songs simultaneously one band after the other, with no breaks. There is no stage hierarchy. No lineup. No hideout. This is a groundbreaking format that will bring back to life the power of live concert.

New promoters New Noise have bought Swedish pop/post-rock group Immanu El over to China for a five city tour.  The band are promoting their new album “Hibernation.”


GINGER KWAN

Ginger Kwan is one of Hong Kong’s hottest and most sought-after singers. She returns to her roots for a show at Heyday, her mother and grandmother are both Shanghainese. Her voice emanates an array of colors, but always remains soulful and melodic.

Local Shanghai hardcore band The Loud Speaker headline Harley’s regular Saturday night showcase of local indie bands. Support comes from Moaning Lisa and Pixel Prism.
