10 BEST French Concession Neighborhood Bars

2017-05-26 ShanghaiWOWeng

There are many features that characterize a neighborhood bar. So for the purposes of clarity (and not to get ripped in the comments, which we always welcome incidentally), it’s important to give our definition of a neighborhood bar.

A neighborhood bar should cater to the neighborhood residents, and give them what they need to enjoy their area. A neighborhood bar usually has an owner who knows the regulars, and provides food and drink so that customers can just hang out for a couple of hours as if they are at home.

We’re not talking a dive bar, but a place that caters to a wide range of people in that particular neighborhood. If you think a neighborhood bar is different or disagree with our definition then leave a comment with your definition.

The Former French Concession is a big neighborhood catering to a diverse bunch of people, so this list is varied. But these are places you can get a decent drink, hang out during the day, can meet to chat at night and get some food as well.

COTTONS

Address: 132 Anting Road, near West Jianguo Road

Tel: 021 6433 7995

Hours: Fri 11:00am - 1:00am

Cotton’s has one of the most chill outdoor seating areas in town, down a quiet little street in the heart of the French Concession. They have done a great job of creating a pretty spot with an outdoor dining area that is certainly fitting of the neighborhood bar title. The chilled-out villa atmosphere can make you feel as if you’re in a European city, and is a great place to grab Sunday brunch or evening drinks with friends or a date.

BOXING CAT

Address: 82 West Fuxing Road, near Yongfu Road

Tel: 021 6426 0360

Hours: Fri 3:00pm - 2:00am

Boxing Cat is an American-style brewpub right in the center of the French Concession. They serve lagers, stouts, pilsners and other beer on rotation. They also have southern American comfort food on the menu. The small outdoor terrace gives the place some nice variety. This is certainly one of the main neighborhood bars in this part of the French Concession.

DAGA BREWPUB

Address: 100 West Fuxing Road, near Yongfu Road

Tel: 021 3469 5338

Hours: Fri 11:00am - 2:00am

This place is laid-back and clean, and it's perfect for hanging with friends or warming up before a night out, the least you’d expect from a neighborhood bar. They specialize in Chinese craft beer from cities like Chengdu, Nanjing, and Beijing. The Chinese draft beer on tap here you’re unlikely find anywhere else in the city. They'll let you sample brews until you find something you like, as not all the beers are to everyone’s taste. There’s food, music and beer, and it’s in the heart of the neighborhood, what more do you need.

THE BEAVER

Address: 28 Yueyang Road, near Dongping Road

Tel: 021 6474 3246

Hours: Mon - Sun, 6:00pm - 6:00am

A feature of a decent neighborhood bar is an owner who recognizes his regulars and this generates a neighborly atmosphere. Thanks to boss Kit, The Beaver certainly has a more relaxed atmosphere compared to some of the other venues in the area. The bottled beer list is one of the best in town and you can watch sport on the big TV. A great place to grab a place at the bar, meet random drinkers and shoot the sh*t.

ABBEY ROAD

Address: 3 Taojiang Road, near Hengshan Road

Tel: 021 5466 2069

Hours: Fri 11:00am - 2:00am

This neat little place has a great covered patio and cheap beer on tap. It feels like you’re in a neighborhood of some sort, hence why we’ve included it here. They usually have pretty good happy hour deals, especially during the summer months. It’s named after the Beatles album, of course, but don’t expect to hear the Beatles played on repeat. The menu is Swiss style food mixed with American bar snacks.

PROJECT WINE

Address: 17-1 North Xiangyang Road, near Julu Road

Tel: 021 5497 9519

Owner Liz gives this spot a really neighborhood feel, even if the industrial exposed concrete walls and untreated metal interior give the bar a more upmarket feel. Featuring an extensive list of wines from all over the world, drinks start from around 48rmb per glass, with happy hour offering two for one from 5-10pm on a selection of those. They offer small pizzas and plates of meat and cheese to snack on.

SHANGHAI BREWERY

Address: 20 Donghu Road, near Huaihai Road

Tel: 021 3356 3996

Hours: Fri 11:30am - 2:00am

Shanghai Brewery is more an after-work / hanging with friends kind of place, so fits neatly into the neighborhood bar category. It’s a pub that brews its own beers, like their Strawberry Lime Cider, a White IPA, and several other selections. They have pretty standard pub food, like burgers and pizza, and a little outside seating. It’s a nice place just to hang out for a while and watch the world go by.

XO BAR

Address: 237 Hengshan Road, near Yongjia Road

Tel: 021 6433 0779

Hours: Daily 5pm- 12am

Not all neighborhood bars have to be about beer, so this cozy wine bar is a neat little addition to the French Concession. From the guys behind wine & beer delivery app BottlesXO, this bar is great for just hanging out and grabbing a glass of wine. They've got lots of wines by the bottle and glass, and craft beers from Germany, Italy and France. It opens onto the street, has a bit of outdoor seating, and is connected to the restaurant upstairs, so you can get a bite to eat too.

TIPSY FIDDLER

Address: No. 6, Lane 135 Fahuazhen Road, near Xingfu Road

Tel: 021 5280 1826

Hours: Daily 3pm-1am

The quintessential neighborhood bar, this Irish pub on Xingfu Lu might not be strictly in the French Concession, but it’s close enough and is THE quintessential neighborhood bar. It’s a down to earth spot and they often have live acoustic music. They also do a malt whiskey of the month and discounted draft beers during happy hour, and always celebrate St Patrick’s Day in fine style with Irish music and plenty of Jameson. And being a neighborhood bar they have staff who have been there for years always recognize you.

THE BEER LADY

Address: 455 Fahuazhen Road, near Dingxi Road

Tel: 021 6283 7617

The Beer Lady stocks close to 200 import labels, ranging from American craft microbrews to high-gravity Belgian Abbey Ales. Again this is maybe just outside the French Concession, but has to be on this list as it’s a friendly neighborhood spot. A great place to meet someone and grab a few drinks before heading out for the night. Your purchases can also be enjoyed on the premises at the makeshift seating area on the street out front.
