10 Places to Hang in Hongqiao

2017-05-30 ShanghaiWOWeng

Hong-what you say? It’s that suburb just beyond Gubei, but also part of Gubei-ish. Capiche? Seriously, it’s not nosebleed suburbia and actually has some pretty cool hangouts, so read on before you diss ‘the Hong!’

HONGQIAO BIRD AND FLOWER MARKET

The Real Housewives of Hongqiao’s happy place, it doesn’t just sell birds and flowers - it also has, turtles, fish and crickets! The numerous shops will let you happily get lost, keeping any lady happy (but maybe not the chappy). Check out homeware, furniture, deco, tableware, cookware, art, lamps, knick-knacks, garden faff, and even Western festive decorations. You know that life-sized horse or reindeer you always wanted? Grab it now and merrryyy shopping!

Address: 718 Hongjing Lu, near Hongsong Lu

XIJIAO STATE GUEST HOUSE

Feeling presidential? This is where you would reside if you were to preside. Housing foreign and local visiting dignatories alike, the serene and magnificent grounds are an oasis of zen. People jog in when security isn’t high, but we wouldn’t advise you enter with a lie. Hotel rooms are available, or book an active day at the fully equipped sports center with indoor and outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, a bowling alley, gym, swimming pool, sauna and games rooms.

Address: 1921 Hongqiao Lu near Hongxu Lu

SOHO 3911

Not quite NYC or London, we’ll still settle for a grungy, convenient, car-free strip of restaurants around a cosy cobblestoned courtyard. Featuring a variety of cuisines, try Little Huia for quality New Zealand food and wine at reasonable prices (and a playground for kids!), or Hikari for Japanese lunch sets in a zen environment. Pop into Dragonfly if you need pampering between restaurant-hopping. In warmer months, sit outdoors and gaze at the stars.

LAO WAI JIE

Yes, it’s called ‘foreigners street’ for a reason, chock full of joints like Big Bamboo and Blue Frog. Hit the hidden gems like Mamacita at the end (fresh Mexican food and margaritas to die for), or stop into Bastiaans mid-way through for freshly baked Euro-treats.

TAKASHIMAYA

Takashi-what? This famous Japanese chain mall couldn't be any cleaner, shinier or Japanese. We say ‘arigato’ to this haven in Hongqiao as entering it is calming. Featuring mid to high-end brands and Japanese goods, check the basement for the food court, kick-ass Japanese supermarket and snacks!

CHENJIAQIAO LU

On a strip behind City Shop (Hongmei Lu), procure yourself funky leather handbags and accessories at Dutch designer Label 88 (they make to order), get your hair styled at expat favourite Hue Salon, pop into Mu Gallery for nouveau Chinese furniture, then take your pick for lunch between East Coast Lagoon (Singaporean hawker fare) or Maison Traiteur (fancy French with the freshest of baguettes, ah-mazing truffle brie, foie gras, and selection of meats and wine).

INTERNATIONAL PEARL CITY

Surprise! There is nothing international about this and it doesn’t just sell pearls (though there is an impressive variety). A hotpotch of fake market vendors, toyshops, tailors, electronics, nail salons and jewellery all exist under one roof. A ‘not overwhelming’ place to take out of town guests, it’s a great place to pick up a kids present or get last minute souvenirs to take home.

THE PLACE

Hongqiao sighed in relief when this spanking new mall opened. No longer was a town-traipse necessary to hit Zara, H&M and other high street favourites. It even boasts the second Zara Home store in Shanghai! With indoor playgrounds, Baker & Spice and other favourites (Blue Frog, Outback, Pizza Express and Boxing Cat Brewery) offering indoor/outdoor seating, have a shop, then sit to eat and drink with p-leisure. Ole supermarket in the basement caters to imported food needs.

Address: 100 Zunyi Lu, near Ziyun Lu

Opening Hours: Daily 10am-10pm

SHANGHAI ZOO

It’s something townies would never have so of course we had to mention this! With extensive grounds to wander whilst observing fauna, spend a day here (its’ actually got a pretty good running track if you want to kill two birds with one stone). Try not to stare at the shenanigans of the out-of-townies.

Address: 2381 Hongqiao Lu, near Yingbin Lu

GENEVA RESTAURANT

Of course we wouldn’t leave you hanging without a good watering hole. Sister-property to Abbey Road in town, Geneva offers hearty European cuisine (some with a twist like sambal fondue!), and has specials every weekday night. With daily happy hour daily 7pm (30-40% off selected drinks) and late closing times, you can start and end as early as you please planted at their shady outdoor bar and terrace.
