WIN This FREE Chicken at Newly Opened My Butchery

2017-06-02 ShanghaiWOWeng

Gone are the days when buying fresh meat requires one to endure the stench of raw flesh or the pesky flies around them. That's because since becoming Shanghai’s first “wang-hong” (internet viral) butchery at Xuhui, My Butchery Table has set the bar high for butchers around town, recently soft opening of their first restaurant in Hongkou.

WIN A CHICKEN

In the comment section, answer: "If you can name your own dipping sauce, what would it be?" The top 5 most liked comments will each win a FREE roast chicken at My Butchery. Voting closes at 3pm on Sunday June 4th. The winners will be notified by 6pm on Monday June 5th.

The Venue

Instead of gory images of raw meat and blood-drenched aprons of the butchers, people are walking into a modern, chic and clean environment here. By just looking at the logo itself, you can see how urban-chic selling meat can be without giving us the guilt of seeing hacked up animal parts laying around.

The inspiration behind the logo is short and simple, “the four animals represent the meat we sell here and that’s also the marking we give to our customers whenever they make a purchase with us.” We were expecting a longwinded description of some boring legend that one must look interested to hear, and thankfully Jacob Leung, owner of My Butchery Table is as cool and straightforward as the venue.

“We will serve only organic wines and top quality grass-fed meat here!” said Jacob before he revealed the upcoming surprises he had for us.

The sides

Roasted sweet corn with Parmesan cheese (RMB30)

After pampering us with glasses of pristine organic wines, we were given a touch of all-American southern hospitality with the classic roasted sweet corn with Parmesan cheese (RMB30)

Black Truffle Fries (RMB 35)

Of course we expect a serving of French fries before our mains get rolling, but we didn’t expect a generous sprinkle of extra crispy Black Truffle Fries (RMB 35) here. A++ on that delightful surprise!

Baby spinach salad, fried tofu, frozen pomelo (RMB 30)

What we love about the salad here is that this place still looks out for the Asian crowd with the fried tofu with baby spinach salad (RMB 30). Just in case your Asian friends start complaining about cold food, it’s good to rely on piping hot tofu to stop the whining.

The Mains

Lobster and beef fillet burger (RMB 118)

We know steak & seafood is a common western tradition, but we didn’t know it could be made into a burger and paired with kale and lime aioli. Not only does the line aioli lift all the flavors of the two meats in a sweet melody, the kale convinces us that we are still eating healthy and giving the extra punch of much-needed nutrients

Roasted venison burger (RMB 68)

Serving game meats in China is a rather uncommon sight, let alone finding a butchery that sells it. But if you want to impress a date or be a gracious host at a dinner party, this venison burger is probably the best way to break the ice. Though the meat patty was a little dry and we had hope for more avocados, it was still a generally good attempt and a good combination of flavors.

Bourbon roasted pork rib, grilled pineapple (RMB 208)

Sweet, sour with a dash of alcohol is always the ideal way to have your meal, or deal with your meat. It’s very wise to use bourbon as a marinate for the pork as it tenderize the meat and seeps in the fragrant flavors, pairing it with grilled pineapple is definitely a match made in heaven with the sour acidity blending in beautifully.

Tomahawk (RMB1180)

Alas, the king of all meats arrived and yes we are referring to the Black Angus M3 here. This place is definitely not playing games when it comes to size, judging from the 1.2kg of meat they gave us, enough to feed an entire village. Tender, moist with the right amount of red, this dish is definitely reserved for a special occasion with your favorite crowd of friends and family to share and impress their palette as well as their instagram accounts.

It’s quite an eye-opening experience to see how My Butchery Table evolved the butchery scene in Shanghai and redefined the concept of going to your local butcher's. This butchery not only wants to be the best place for you to buy your fresh meats, they want to be the child-friendly place to host family meals and a cozy spot to snuggle with a first date.
