Top Vegan Dishes in Shanghai

2017-06-06 ShanghaiWOWeng

Summer is here. It is the time when most of us vegans explore the city, filled with hope of finding at least ONE dish that’s not spiked with sentient exploitation. When our dreams are crushed with that hidden dairy in a burger bun or the shredded pork in MaPu Tofu, we can always count on retreating to these restaurants. Here are our top picks and under three themes.

HEALTHY/WHOLE FOODS, PLANT-BASED EATING

LIZZY’S ALL NATURAL

Vegan options available

This is a vegan health-nut heaven. Their fruity banana ice cream topped with nuts and hemp protein goods, vegan yogurt, nut butters, some of the greenest and creamiest smoothies. Not a complete restaurant in terms of dining, but a charming and comfortable seating area is available. A peaceful and cute place to hang out with friends for a healthy brunch and gossip session. It's definitely a place you can eat everyday. They have two more locations, but this one makes to our restaurant list this time.

Address: MORE > EAT 758 Julu Lu near Fumin Lu

VEGETARIAN LIFESTYLE (HUAIHAI)

Vegan options available

Quite the healthy choice if you are looking for MSG free, brown rice inclusive, minimaly oil options. Service is prompt and polite and has a charming ambience. Definitely the place to go if you want to have healthy Chinese food without having to worry about quality.

Address: No.258 Fengxian Lu

PURE AND WHOLE

Vegan options available

They have a quite a selection of vegan food, that includes burgers, wraps, salads and some amazing vegan cheesecake desserts. The whole menu isn’t vegan, but certainly has very little frying involved in most of the dishes. They say, “..we use only the healthiest oils, we don’t do MSG or any other additives and we don’t have a single fryer.” We believe them.

Address: KERRY PARKSIDE PUDONG, Corner of Fangdian Road and Huamu Road/ SHANGHAI CENTRE-JING'AN, 1376 West Nanjing Road (Portman Complex)/JING'AN DISTRICT, 98 Yanping Road (near Xinzha Road)

SPROUT WORKS

Vegan options available

As you can see, they have quite a few locations around the city. The food is a nice fusion between Chinese and Western food options. While it may be off-putting for some vegans to see plenty of meat in this self-service canteen-style place, you certainly need to give them brownie points for having some of the best tasting salads.

Address: 185 Madang lu/ 168 Lujiazui xi road /  122 Zunyi road number 36/ 301 Huashan road/ 84 Taixing road/ China World Mall Tower 3, 1 Jianguomenwai Avenue, Unit NL4022

TRIBE ORGANIC

Vegan options available

The brunch options are super healthy – organic produce, no frying and very flavourful. They also have raw vegan desserts and a very good selection of vegan ice creams. Once you try this place, it will become a staple option for those lazy weekend mornings.

Address: 291 Fumin Lu

BUMBU

Vegan options available

These guys have come up with a separate vegan menu for the 21-day vegan challenge that they continue serving. Vegan Indonesian food is certainly hard to find in Shanghai. Tempeh dishes are the ones to try here along with some very saucy veggie dishes.

Address: B1/F, 555 Nanjing Xi Lu, near Chengdu Bei Lu

URBAN THAI

Vegan options available

Thai cuisine is usually very vegan friendly by default. This place proves to be the same with a wide variety of coconut and spicy vegan options. Super healthy stews and stir-fries will leave your body craving for this far east goodness.

Vegan Comfort food/High-in-fat, ultra-deliciousness

Address: 938 Changle Lu, near Wulumuqi Lu, Jing An

VEGAN COMFORT FOOD

GREEN VEGE CAFÉ

All vegan place

Yes, vegan chicken nuggets are possible. It is mostly western food and this might be the only place in Shanghai where they get it right. This place is the king of all vegan junk food places: deep fried veggie meat, extra cashew cheese flowing, coconut cream rich desserts and some kick ass sizzlers. Vegan glutton heaven.

Address: 938 Changle Lu, near Wulumuqi Lu, Jing An

MINGSHENG VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

All Vegan place

Chinese version of the above which has loads of veggie items like the deep fried veggie balls and mushroom meat dishes that will leave you feeling so naughty and satisfied. The vegan Tiramisu is the symbol of how unhealthy and delicious it can get.

Address: 768 Xie Tu Road (at Da Pu Rd)

HAPPY BUDDHA

Vegan Options available

This is one of our favorite comfort food places for vegan eats in Shanghai. However, unlike the other places we pig-out at, this place is quite healthy for a fast food joint. Fresh salads, lots of kale in the wraps and very affordable vegan buffet on Tuesdays, popularly known as Taco Tuesdays.

Address: 388 Shaanxi Nan Rd, Xuhui District

JEN DOW

Vegan Options available

They have three levels to eat in and each level comes with its own specialty. The first floor is a canteen-style, budget-friendly place, the second floor is more for ordering off the menu and the upper floors have buffets and private rooms. You have to be careful when ordering because the labelling for vegan options is not the best. They also have a nice mock meat store that sells frozen items.

Address: 3F, 151 Yuyuan Road

YU LI HUNAN RESTAURANT

Vegan options available

This is a new addition to the places that vegans can go to. It is spicy as Hunan food gets, with the most sinful veganized dishes you can imagine – spicy friend potato, fire wok tofu, sizzling cauliflower and those fried green beans. Super budget friendly, super soul food friendly. No guarantees on how your stomach will feel in the morning though.

Address: 1135 Beijing Xi Lu, near Shanxi Bei Lu

ORGANIC KITCHEN

Vegan options available

A more healthy side to vegan junk food would be here. The lentil burgers, falafel, fried veggie patty dipped in Tahini are some of the must try. They come up with surprising vegan options on Wednesday nights that are usually not on the menu, which keeps the community keen on coming back for more. Plus, has a good selection of healthy juices.

Address: 57 Fuxing W Rd, Xuhui District

VEGAN DATE NIGHTS

LUCKY ZEN

All Vegan

This restaurant has a great ambience for a romantic dinner and some awesome vegan food. Many vegan community members have given positive feedback on their experiences here and it remains one of the places you can take that special person to.

Address: 2F, 428 Madang Rd, Luwan (at He Fei Rd)

IF VEGAN

All Vegan

A bit too brightly lit to be romantic, but certainly a place that can impress a non-vegan trying vegan food for the first time. They have those fancy tablets where you can order food from and also some truly impeccable service. Budget friendly as well.

Address: 408 Shaanxi Bei Lu (at Beijing Xi Road)

VEGETARIAN HOTPOT

All vegan

Hidden on the third floor of a mall, this is one of the hidden gems that is easy on the pocket, but really good for privacy. The hotpot is all vegan and there are a number dishes to chose from. The only downside to this place, like the above two, is that you will remain sober throughout your date.

Address: 1788 Nanjing Xi Lu, 1788 Eco City, Room F301 [third floo], near Wulumuqi Bei Lu

INDIA KITCHEN

Vegan options available

Nothing is more romantic than eating Dosa and sipping on wine and talking about your love for Slumdog Millionaire at India Kitchen. Romantic setting with a good selection of vegan options. Make sure you emphasize the no butter, no yogurt, no ghee part to the servers when ordering.

Address: 3911 Hongmei Rd, Changning Qu

FU HE HUI

Vegan options available

If you want to prove that you have a lot of disposable income and can control your gluttonous nature for the sake of romance, then this is the place to go. It is perhaps the priciest vegan food can get here, with portions being very tiny per course – and there are usually 7 courses in the set you order. The quality of food is of course really good, however, remember to bring your wallet, cause Wechat doesn’t always work for this insanely expensive place. Ask for that posh private room, romantic and well-worth the money.

Address: 1037 Yuyuan Lu, near Jiangsu Lu

WUJIE

Vegan Options Available

This place falls somewhere between the budget friendly to the more expensive side of vegan eating. The vegan options are plenty and the ambience very charming. The service is not always English speaker friendly and you may have to go back and forth with your translator. The portions are decently sized, and it's a place where you can enjoy some low-key romantic conversation.

Address: 392 Tianping Rd, XuJiaHui/ At the Bund, 4/F, No.22 Zhongshan East Er Road

MAYA MEXICAN

Vegan options available

This is the place if you want some serious romantic vibes. Almost every item on the menu can be veganized on request and they have a very impressive bar that has some of the best cocktails the city offers. The lighting, the music and the service screams class. Highly recommended for a first date.

Address: 568 Julu Rd, Near Shanxi Nan Lu

BOMBAY BISTRO

Vegan options available

Conveniently located right next to the pub/club The Apartment, this is a classy restaurant from top to bottom. It opened a few months ago and the ambience couldn't be more romantic that this: Indian music, stunning interior, cocktails laced with Indian herbs, Samosa with Hummus dips – it is simply mind blowing. Definitely a place to talk about taking the relationship to the next level.

Address: 2nd Floor, 47 Yongfu Rd. (Near West Fuxing Rd.)
