5 Cheap A** Coffees As Good as Starbucks

2017-06-13 ShanghaiWOWeng

Do you ever wonder why youd spend RMB 30 on a cup of coffee? Is there really a good reason for the higher price or are we just distracted by the marketing gimmicks and fancy-looking cups? While waiting for payday to arrive, we decided to embark on a penny-pinching journey to find some cheaper alternatives around the city, heres what we came up with!

KFC

French Brulee Latte (RMB 17 M size)

A complete rip-off of the caramel macchiato at Starbucks, this hot cup of frenchie is definitely a steal when it comes to taste, quality ingredients and portion. Even the checkered drizzle at the top of the milk foam is exactly the same, well if you want to be picky, the caramel lines are bigger and fatter here, but that’s more to love if you ask us cheapskates. What’s more, KFC members get a free size upgrade for certain drinks like the Hazelnut Latte or the Cappuccino, try asking the Starbucks barista for a free upgrade, we reckon you’d get the ‘side-eye’ indicating you should take your broke ass home.

McCafe

Cappuccino (RMB 12 small size)

One word: Instagram-worthy. Ok maybe that’s two sort of, but whatever. Whether it’s a date you’re trying to impress or a coffee artwork you want to drink to kick-start a day, this cup of ‘cheap-ccino’ is definitely easy on the eyes and friendly to the budget as well. A little weak on the caffeine side, but the price and craftsmanship make up for it. Unless the Starbucks barista really wants your number, good luck getting any razzle dazzle from that green apron.

Burger King

Latte (RMB 17 regular size)

You know how they say like-father-like-son, well in this case it’s definitely like burger like coffee, as this is probably the strongest cup of latte you can find in any fast food chain. We are definitely not exaggerating when we say strong, because every sip makes you wonder if milk is even added. This is something you’d want to beat the Monday morning blues or a nasty hangover cause the aroma awakens the senses like a foghorn. Getting that level of kick from Starbucks would cost you extra in espresso shots, which means more money, which means you should just go to Burger King instead right?

7-Eleven

Matcha Latte ( RMB 14)

Have you ever encountered one of those scenarios where both things taste the absolute same to you despite one being supposedly a higher quality? Well with this cup of Matcha Latte, we can’t tell if it’s really that over-hyped green tea latte at Starbucks because it tastes more or less the same to us. Rumored to have the same distributor, this cup of green caffeine gives you a moment of affordable zen, or if you have ‘yellow fever,’ the much cheaper alternative for your palette.

85℃ Daily Cafe

Brown Sugar Macchiato (RMB 12)

We always have our doubts when it comes to ordering frappuccino’s at Starbucks. With all the elaborate added sweetness, we really wonder if there’s still any coffee left to savor. Unlike this cup of clean-cut coldness fit for the summer heat, the brown sugar sweetness is relevant throughout the drink without taking any attention away from the basic coffee. The whipped cream here continuously stays afloat and remains light and airy, resembling a cheese-like aftertaste as you reach the bottom. We strongly suggest you have something to eat with this drink as the rich dairy sweetness opens up your appetite for some heavier bites.

Sea Salt Coffee (RMB 12)

For some reason, adding savory flavors in coffee has become a big trend in China, from the rapid openings of ‘wang-hong’/net frenzy coffee and tea shops, or the popular sea salt caramel flavor in Starbucks. While we are not complaining about this interesting combination of flavors, we cannot justify being charged significantly more for a sprinkle of saltiness in our coffee. This cup of sea salt coffee is the answer to the practical folks out there who are all for gastronomy, but sane enough to keep their banknotes intact. We recommend you throw the straw away and sip the drink from the cup so that the ratio of savory foam balances perfectly with the bitter-sweetness of the coffee. What’s more, it leaves a cute milk-mustache for you to selfie and act adorable with.
