2017-06-18 ShanghaiWOWeng

It's the summer time! That means, you may have overseas visitors who are curious about your life in Shanghai. Let’s face it, not everyone can spend money like the Kardashians. So what to do if you have visiting friends in town and you want to show them the best that Shanghai has to offer? Enjoy our Broke Man’s Guide to touring Shanghai.

LANDMARK SITES

There are plenty of landmarks and activities to occupy your visitors. Here are the Broke Man alternatives to the popular recommendations.

Ferry

Huangpu River Tour

Maybe the Huangpu River cruise is just too costly, or you have claustrophobia issues being on a boat for too long. Regardless, this is a cool way to see the scenic river sights along the Huangpu River. RMB2 and you are on your way!

Bike Share

Any Bicycle Tour

Lots of fun things to do in Shanghai, including bicycle tours. But honestly, you have lived in China and you can play tour guide. Open the Mobike or ofo app and begin to take your visitors on your very own bike tour! RMB1 for the bike rental, and your countless days of experience will make it a tour of a lifetime for your buddies.

AMAZING LOCAL EATS

There is only so much of the roadside noodles you can take your guests out for. Afterall, they flew all the way to Shanghai to see you! So here are great restaurant picks that won’t hurt your wallet.

Canton 8

Michelin-2 star

Why would you come to Shanghai and eat western food? Look like a food expert and go to the world’s cheapest Michelin-2-star restaurant at Canton 8. It will make you look like a connoisseur, and face it…there is no cheaper deal anywhere in the world.

Address: 457 Jumen Lu, (63 Runan Jie) Room 101, near Runan Jie

Madame Goose

Michelin-2 star

Or, you can take them to Madame Goose. Not the world’s cheapest Michelin 1-star, but certainly the cheapest Hong Kong BBQ cuisine in town!

Address: 3366 Caobao Lu, Vanke Plaza, 5/F, Room508A, near Qixin Lu

Sofia’s Pizza

Beer & Free Pizza

Maybe you don't want Chinese food, where else can the Broke Man go? How about Sofia’s pizza. If you purchase 5 craft beers, you can get one full pizza. That’s right! Eat AND drink your heart out.

Address: 37 Anfu Lu, 1/F, near Changshu Lu

Street Food

Flaunt  Yo’ Chinese

From the local skewer guy to the many of Shanghai’s food streets, you can count on getting full for less than RMB100. This is the perfect blend of local culture that will give you a chance to speak Chinese and impress your buds.

VIEWS

Shanghai is famous for its beautiful views, but there's no need to drain your wallet for them. Here are two great suggestions that won’t leave you broke.

VUE Bar

Jacuzzi with a view

Who doesn’t want a view of Pudong and Puxi all at once? When you head up to Hyatt on the Bund, pay the RMB100 cover charge and you can have one of the most beautiful views in town. The best part? The cover charge also includes two standard drinks. This is a definite steal!  Oh, and if you're hot, you can take a dip in the Jacuzzi…

Address: 199 Huangpu Lu, Hyatt on The Bund, 32-33/F, near Wuchang Lu

TOPS at Banyan Tree

Super sized terrace

If you want another good view, check out TOPS at Banyan Tree. Their sprawling outdoor terrace gives you an incredible view of Pudong and another angle of The Bund. Why not have two mojitos for RMB100? Surreally amazing view to go along with mojitos in flavors like strawberry, coconuts, blueberry, and more.

Address: 19 Gongping Lu, Banyan Tree Shanghai On the Bund, Rooftop, near Dongdaming Lu

When: Every Thursday, 7-9pm

PARTY SCENE

If you want to take your friend out to experience Shanghai’s nightlife without spending too much, here are some options…

FOUND 158

This is the cheapest option in town for people watching AND for who want to be in the “hot spot.” Your night can not go lower than Negroni’s at RMB45 than at Homeslice. If Negroni is not your thing, how about a carafe of Aperol Spritz for RMB135 (serves about 4, less than RMB40 per glass if sharing with 3 others)

Perry's

Clubbing on a dime

Who can say no to a party bucket of RMB35 for a rum and coke mix? It is just the right concoction to get you and your friends to groove through the night.

Family Mart

One-stop shop

You know it, I know it, we all do it. Where to go for cheap beer? Our local family mart. It is one of the unspoken joys of living in China, which is drinking on the streets. Obviously we expect you will have enough class not to be a sloppy drunk, because seriously that is for free. However, we know prices at the high end clubs maybe too much to handle! And, there is no shame in indulging your visiting friends to a slice of life in Shanghai. Also, the food selection isn't bad either for a quick after-clubbing meal.
