Your Guide: Top 5 Day Drinking Spots in the FFC

2017-06-20 ShanghaiWOWeng

For the cool kids in Shanghai there’s only one place to hang out: The Cultural Preservation Zone of Xuhui District, otherwise known as the Former French Concession.

In the heart of Shanghai, this area is great for day drinking because of the beautiful surroundings and number of places to hang out. We’ve selected five spots that should cover the preferences of most people who reside in Shanghai.

Now, some people might say some of these spots aren’t in the French Concession. Well we say, does anyone actually know where the French Concession starts and ends? We’ve selected these particular spots according to the map below. Take it up with Lowcola on Flikr if you disagree, or leave your say in the comments.

VITA

Address: 557 Yongjia Road, near South Wulumuqi Road

Hours: Open from 1030am

Tucked down a little lane behind a 1930s house, Vita is set in a beautiful little square garden next to a whisky bar and a spa. Expect to overhear French (this is the Former French Concession) as they serve decent French fair, oysters and champagne for example. If you’re looking to have a daytime drinking date then this is the place to start, your bae will be impressed. The best thing about Vita is the outdoor seating and the quiet surroundings.

Brownstone

Address: Surpass Court, Unit 311, 570 Yongjia Road, near Yueyang Road

Hours: Open from 11am

This spot in kind of like a cocktail lounge, with an upscale Brooklyn vibe. It’s pretty dark inside, so if you’re the sort of day drinker who likes to hide their shame then you’ll be just fine here. They also have outside space in the courtyard of Surpass Court, so you can also get drunk under the sun in an area off the main streets and while away a few hours. Shanghai can be like a village sometimes, so it’s nice to be able to get on it without having to make small talk with workers passing by when really all you want is your drinks to be filled when they get empty.

Funkadeli

Address: 291 Fumin Road, near Changle Road

Hours: Open from 11am

Situated on the apex of Fumin road, Changle road and Donghu Road, this spot is great for daytime drinking and people watching. The outside seating area is very relaxed and if you park here early you can chuckle to yourself as the workers buzz around trying to grab a quick snack on their short lunch break. There’s everything you need here for a long afternoon of inebriation: Draft beers (RMB35-60), wine by the glass (RMB30-40), the essential cocktails (RMB30-40), as well as food like cold cuts, cheese platters, salads, wraps, paninis, and focaccia all for around RMB65. An afternoon spent here is an afternoon well spent.

Tattoo Family

Address: 260 South Xiangyang Road, near Yongkang Road

Hours: Open from 2pm

If you’re going to get a tattoo for the first time then being slightly inebriated is a good idea. Think of it as Dutch courage. Well, Tattoo Family is the perfect place to get your drink and your ink on at the same time. Upstairs it's a fully functioning tattoo studio and downstairs is a fully functioning bar. The specialty drink here is absinthe, pretty much the perfect drink to have if you’re wanting to wake up in the morning without a clue how you got a tattoo. A great little cozy bar with a dose of gothic chic.

Blarney Stone

Address: 77 Yongkang Road, near Xiangyang Road

Hours: Open from 3pm

It’s pretty well known that the best drinkers in the world are Irish. And so if you’re going to drink all day then being surrounded by the most fun people in the world is all good. Although much of Yongkang Lu was shut down, the Blarney Stone is still going strong. As the name of the bar suggests this is a good place to come and chat to the staff, who should have the gift of the gab, assuming they’ve kissed the Blarney Stone, and we’re not talking about the walls of the bar here. It opens in the afternoon so get down early and sink a few Guinness instead of lunch, because if it works for the Irish then it can work for the rest of us.

Come back next week to check out day drinking spots in Huangpu district
