Big Changes Coming to Fuxing Park

2017-06-24 ShanghaiWOWeng

Most people these days head to The Bund if they want some high class fun. However, you may not know that if you spun the clocks back 10 years or so, the fanciest place to be was actually Fuxing Park!

After years outside the spotlight, Fuxing Park is undergoing a huge transformation. It’s going to have some big new buildings alongside a number of trendy shops, and perhaps it will usher the park back to the chic, upper-class status it once had.

Nightlife Capital 10 Years Ago

Nowadays all that’s really left of Fuxing Park are the forgotten memories from the 80s, when a ton of crazy expensive cars were parked around the edges - Ferraris, Lamborghinis, you name it!

Of course back in those days, there was no such thing as WeChat or social media, so people had to actually go to the park to find out who was doing what or what the latest trend was.

Ten or so years ago, this is where all the most prosperous and luxurious nightclubs were located too, such as Park 97, Muse, Richy and Guandi. They were certainly not the sort of places that you could drink until dawn - you’d be lucky if you made it past midnight at the prices they charged!

14 years ago, the legend of the wealth and prosperity of Fuxing Park began to fade, as did the crowds of people flocking there to see and be seen. Thankfully for many, this led to Fuxing Park becoming what we know and love today – a tranquil, peaceful oasis in the middle of the city.

You may have noticed recently that the park’s till near the north gate is undergoing a transformation, with a flurry of recent construction.

What's New?

According to reliable sources, this whole arsection is going to transform into a three-storey designer space. The first floor will be the dining section. There will be outdoor seating to enjoy views of the park, as well as a lot to see inside.

The first floor is not currently in any sort of condition suitable for visitors. But once completed, it will be used for hosting a variety of art exhibitions and other activities.

Of course if you look at the current state of the place, you wouldn’t feel overly optimistic about it. However, do not fear. The spiral staircase is going to have trees in it to replicate the images of lush greenery in the park outside.

This spiral staircase will take you down to the lower ground floor, where numerous business will set up shop.

The 2nd floor has been meticulously designed, with the help of LED lights, to simulate the natural sky in the room. You could come in here at any time of day or night and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference!

The lobby on the 1st floor is yet another absolute gem. Firstly, the till appears to be made out of crystal! Secondly, the staircase is absolutely magnificent!

On the left hand side, the staircase is designed to merge old and new together, whilst also incorporating modern fashion.

Then on the right hand side, there is what appears to be yet another staircase. But don’t be fooled: it’s actually going to be used to display various works of art from local designers.

The joint office is located on the second floor, surrounded by the crystal-design patio.

On the construction site we can already get a glimpse of some of the ceiling lighting, which adds to the elegance of the whole building.

There’s a very mysterious narrow corridor in the corner. When we asked one of the construction team what it was, he just laughed and said we’ll have to wait for the grand opening to find out.

Although Fuxing Park is not the flourishing, hip place it once was, this vintage-esque revival should bring people, young and old, flocking back.

There are plenty of good restaurants to choose from here if you want to try a scrumptious brunch.

According to our source, Danish contemporary designer Lars Ravn will be present at the opening ceremony to showcase some of his work.

And don’t forget about all the shops! Or if shopping’s not your thing, you can enjoy the artwork instead.

The Team Behind the Transformation of Fuxing Park

Although the renovation project is not yet complete, we managed to find out the team behind the transformation, and you may even have heard of some of them! It was designed by a collaboration between official brand WE and commercial project LAB. Their first masterpiece was the 5th floor of Fudu Guangchang shopping centre in Pudong.

WE+ Business Collaboration

The collaboration between WE+ and LAB has created the perfect combination of space, so that work, life and art can freely mix and mingle.

LAB Collection Space

In comparison to the office space, the LAB collection space is a lot of fun. It offers four different categories of space: wood, leather, green and coffee. Not only can you buy innovative products in these spaces, but also learn how to make them!

ZOWOO (woodwork)

This is a factory shop, with freshly made wood items and the machines all readily available. Whether you want a cute decoration, a watch, or even a musical instrument, it can be made here!

ZOWOO is completely different from any other woodwork space in Shanghai, as it provides you with the factory experience.

You can sign up for woodwork classes here. They’ll teach you how to produce their favorite wooden products, as well as school you on the best types of wood to use and what to do with the leftover chips.

TABLE 12 SPECIALTY COFFEE:

Inside there are only 2 tables and chairs and a single row of benches, but the space is very open-plan. Not only will they provide you with a delicious cup of coffee, but they’ll let you take over as barista and learn how to make one yourself!

Don’t worry if you’re very picky with your coffee - the people here are experts and will teach you how to make whichever coffee ticks your boxes!

BOTTLE

This is a cute little green shop that looks a bit like a forest! They don’t teach you how to simply grow green plants, but how to grow your own little green garden inside a bottle!

There’s a different world inside every bottle - tropical rainforests, oceans, beaches… It’s beautiful.

Handmade Leather Shop

As soon as you walk through the door, you can see a variety of handmade leather goods. You can personally select the material, color, design and style of whatever it is you want to make.

Just like ZOWOO, this is also a factory-experience shop.

You’ll be taught everything from scratch, from how to hold a needle up, to how to operate the heavy machinery. Basically, it’s a hands-on, step-by-step guide to producing your very own dream bag!
