Looking for something new to do around the city? Tired of EDM festivals, water towns and tiny mountain getaways? Here’s something you might want to try: exploring some of the hidden gem destinations near Shanghai.

Qiandao Lake underwater Town

Address: Chun’an County, Hangzhou Xijiao, Zhengjiang Province

Open time: The city is literally underwater, beneath Qiandao Lake (which is open all day).

This one is literally a hidden destination. Qiandao Lake is a renowned landmark around the world, but not many people know there are two underwater towns from thousand of years of history beneath the surface. In 1959, these two cities, called Lion City and He City, were sank underwater overnight for the construction of Xin’an River Hydropower Station. They remain hidden beneath the water, impossible to explore unless you’re extremely adventurous and have excellent scuba gear.

Gouqi Island

Address: Gouqi Island, Chengsi County, Zhoushan City

Gouqi Island is located in the east of Chengsi Islands and so is close to both Shanghai and Zhoushan city. Summer is the best time to travel here, as they have awesome beaches and a unique fishtown culture (not to mention great seafood). It’s low key, beautiful, and well off the beaten path.
