3 Beer Cocktails You Can Make Yourself

2017-06-29 ShanghaiWOWeng

Up here in WOW Towers we are always looking for something new. We LOVE our cocktails, but sometimes it can get pretty boring drinking the same old classics like an Old Fashioned, Mojito or Bloody Mary.

Don’t get us wrong, we’ll always sip on a classic cocktail and always want to hear about a new bar making these delicious liquid creations, but Shanghai is an international city with three bars in the top 50 bars in Asia. This should inspire all the bars in this great city to push higher and show that they too can create great drinks that cut against the grain.

So we set out to find some beer cocktails in this fair city we all call home. With the help of Michael Cichon from The Hop Project we were able to try three beer cocktails that are perfect for warm summer evenings, or as an alternative to a straight up pint while watching the game.

Maybe you’re not into beer at all, but want to try something different. If so, the three drinks we’ve selected are available to buy at The Hop Project. Go say hi to Michael and give them a try.

The three cocktails we’ve selected contain ingredients that you can easily find in Shanghai so you can make these drinks yourself at home. We’ve given alternative ingredients from the drinks made in the bar if you wish to do so.

Bee’s Knees (RMB50)

Based on the Prohibition Era cocktail, this twist makes for a deliciously refreshing light beer flavored tipple. Usually this cocktail is shaken, but because beer is carbonated this isn’t possible. This drink uses a Beijing-style Belgian Wit beer.

Ingredients:

Jing-A Mandarin Wheat

Honey (50ml)

Lemon juice (50ml)

Gin (30ml)

In a wine glass add the honey, lemon juice and gin and then stir. Add ice and then top with the beer. Simple as that!

If you don’t have the Jing-A Mandarin Wheat then you can use any hefeweizen beer, the Widmer Hefe is the classic beer used to make this cocktail. You can also use any Belgium witbier to make a lighter version. Never use a German hefeweizen in this cocktail.

You can still taste the beer, but it’s a very light flavor, and not bitter like beer. Overall the drink has fruity, summery tones. This cocktail is for those who say they don’t like beer. Give it to your girlfriend, but don’t tell her it has beer in it.

Michelada (RMB50)

This Mexican drink is a spin on the classic Bloody Mary and Bloody Caesar, switching vodka for beer. The name is a Spanish portmanteau, combining "chelada” referring to any cold beverage and “mi” referring to my, and means “My Cold Drink”. Michael uses the Qingdao Gold, the best of the Qingdao beers, which comes in a brown bottle.

Ingredients:

Qingdao Gold (or any light lager)

Clemato juice (or tomato juice) 200ml

Celery seasoning

Horseradish

Tabasco sauce (3 dashes)

Worcestershire sauce (dash)

Lime

Salt

Mix the clemato juice, celery seasoning, horseradish, Tabasco sauce, and Worcestershire sauce to taste in a small glass. Add to a pint glass rimmed with celery seasoning over ice. Top with lager. Boom, done!

This is a perfect summer drink, early in the day when you don’t want something too sweet or too strong. It’s a great drink for people who want to try something different. It’s spicy, filling, wholesome, savory, and surprisingly light. It’s surprising that it works, but it very much does. A must try for everyone.

Ender’s Game (RMB65)

This drink, named after the 1985 military science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card, is a classic boilermaker. It uses beer and whiskey mixed together, as opposed to as a whiskey chaser.

Ingredients:

Jing-A Guizhou Smoked Chili Porter

Grants whiskey

This drink uses a dark malty beer, in this case the Jing-A Guizhou Smoked Chili Porter (the alcohol content is only 4.5%). Then you add whiskey to taste, but usually it’s around 10% of the beer. So for 330ml of porter/stout, add 33ml of whiskey.

As both of these are malt-based beverages they make a perfect boilermaker. Any porter or stout will do, but this specialty Jing-A Guizhou Smoked Chili Porter at The Hop Project has a little chili kick to compliment the whiskey really well.

This is an end of the night drink, simple, easy, and strong. If you want to contemplate the universe and think about where you are in life, then give this drink a go.
