We Tried, Ate and Conquered Xiao Long Xia, You Can Too!
Its crayfish season here in Shanghai (although we’re convinced that’s made up since we see crayfish everywhere all year round). To celebrate, we went to one of Shanghai’s most famous Xiao Long Xia restaurant to check things out.
Fomo has multiple locations around the city and is well-known by locals, especially the ones that love xiao long xia. Went checked out the one on Shanxi Nan Lu, here’s how it went…
Thirteen Spicy Crayfish
(850g for RMB188)
First up was the Thirteen Spicy Crayfish, we didn’t count but it seemed like there were more than 13. They were great, with huge hunks of garlic, green peppers, and a sort of bitter spice to them.
Signs of Crayfish
(540g for RMB98)
Signs of Crayfish was the most generic sort of crayfish we tried. This is probably the best dish for anyone who’s not interested in getting too crazy. Cooked to perfection and not too spicy, highly recommended.
Beer Crayfish
(850g for RMB188)
This was the uniamimous favorite at our table. The crayfish are cooked in beer and a heady mix of sweet spices. We almost ordered a second helping of this one, ALMOST.
The Steamed/candscence/Iced crayfish
(1000g for RMB268)
There’s a reason the waitress brought this one out last, it’s a real show stopper. The dry ice and steam billowing out of the bowl demands to be photographed, but even better: the crayfish themselves. These were the largest of any dish, looking more like small lobsters than crayfish. Served cold with no added spices, the meat is meant to be dipped in a spicy wasabi sauce. Obviously goes great with beer.
