Top 5 Local Craft Beer Brewers in Shanghai

2017-08-02 ShanghaiWOWeng

In March this year, AB-InBev bought local craft brewery Boxing Cat, which had recently won China's first-ever medal in the World Beer Festival. They also bought Belgium beer bar Kaiba, which has had a rebrand recentlyand opened the Goose Island Brewhouse. People want IPA.

There are also plenty of foreign craft beer brewers pushing their IPAs to drinkers in Shanghai. American craft beers Brooklyn Brewery, Firestone Walker, Ballast Point, Rogue, and Boulevard are available. Little Creatures, and Mornington are available from Australia, and Scottish brand BrewDog is here via beverage importer Topshelf.

But it’s clear there’s a new generation of indigenous brewmasters in China, some are even foreigners who are well integrated into Chinese society, and they want you to drink, yup you guessed it, their IPA.

Oh, and don't forget China has a beer market worth more than $80bn-a-year, with craft beer only a tiny portion at maybe 0.1%, with this set to triple in the coming year. Time to reach for the you know what…

So, if you love your IPA then why not go local and search out these five brands, each having something uniquely Chinese about them. Shame it’s not the price of a Lawson’s large Qingdao.

Master Gao

Gao Yan, known as Master Gao because he holds a US masters degree in Chemistry, is a pioneer among China’s home brewers. His craft beers are made in Nanjing, and are infused with the know-how of traditional Chinese medicine. Master Gao beers are often made for Chinese tastes, the jasmine tea lager and Baby IPA, a less hoppy version of the typical brew, best-sellers. Most of the ingredients Master Gao uses are western, but the way the beer is brewed is according to Chinese culture and customs.

Jing-A

This Beijing brewed beer can be found in Shanghai. Their beers are crisp and are available in their own brewhouse and restaurant in the capital. The beers are often named for the city: There’s the double IPA Airpocalypse, Worker’s Pale Ale, and Galactic Haze IPA. For World Baijiu Day in August 2016, Jing-A unveiled a bold, uniquely Chinese beer. Using red sorghum and jiuqu - the plant and yeast used to make baijiu - they created a very alcoholic hybrid ale.

Great Leap

Great Leap’s brewpubs are some of the most crowded restaurants in Beijing, serving a rotating selection of ales, IPAs, porters and other beers. They are strongly committed to using local ingredients, including Sichuan pepper and Tieguanyin oolong tea, and often draw on Chinese history and culture. Honey Ma Gold, #6 Pale Ale, and Banana Wheat are some of the best sellers. Don't expect this place to sell out to AB-InBev any time soon.

Slow Boat

Now one of biggest craft brewers, Slow Boat has expanded significantly since 2011 because of distribution deals in restaurants and bars across a dozen Chinese cities. The name of the brand and the logo, a ship, is inspired by the 1940s Frank Loesser song, "On a Slow Boat to China." Their beer is always fresh and unpasteurized, with no preservatives and no chemicals. The most popular beers are all IPAs, of course, and include Captain's Pale Ale, Monkey's Fist IPA, and Zombie Pirate Pale Ale.

Reberg

Although lesser known around China, this Shanghai brewery is committed to making beer that contains no preservatives or additives of any kind. The inspiration behind the beer is German, so their brewpub in Hongqiao area sells a decent range of pilsner, dunkel, Hefeweizen and of course IPA.
